An asteroid on its crater during the Creature Stage. This formation is only found on the player's homeworld.

Asteroids are rocks that are found in space, although they can fall into planets as a meteor. In Spore, they can have many functions, such as decoration, game events, eye-candy or props.

Cell Stage[]

In the Cell Stage, an asteroid brings the player's cell to the planet. Its fragments can be found throughout the stage, containing cell parts. Some could argue that this asteroid was, in fact, a comet.

Creature Stage[]

In the Creature Stage, asteroids appear in two instances. Occasionally, a meteor about the size of the player's creature along with a minor meteor shower will crash into the homeworld, scaring all creatures. Despite the dramatic event, it does not affect the gameplay at all, although the minor meteors can stun creatures. The second instance is when the player may come across a crashed asteroid in the ground. This too is merely eye-candy.

Tribal Stage[]

In the Tribal Stage, as in the Creature Stage, they player may come across crashed asteroids in the ground. Again, they are merely eye-candy.

Civilization Stage[]

In the Civilization Stage, as in the previous stages, the player can find crashed asteroids, which are merely eye-candy.

Space Stage[]

In the Space Stage, asteroids are much more common and serve more purposes than decoration. As decoration, the player's homeworld may still have the impact crater. In the interplanetary view, asteroids may be presented as lone drifters, similar to comets. However, sometimes they can form asteroid belts around a star, and a star may have many of them. Anyhow, asteroids in the interplanetary view are merely decorative. Unlike stars and planets, asteroids and belts cannot be seen when the player is on a planet.

On T0 planets with low atmosphere, naturally-occurring meteor showers are common hazards. The player can use the Asteroid Call Button to make an asteroid crash into a planet to decrease its atmosphere and increase its temperature, or use the Meteor Shower tool to merely increase temperature. In addition, the Asteroid Call Button is different from meteor showers in that it forms a crater.

Spore Galactic Adventures[]

In Galactic Adventures, asteroids appear in two instances. The first is as a prop that the player can use. The prop is affected by gravity, and if it is made large enough and dropped, it may crush the player's captain.

The second instance is when the player turns the adventure's atmosphere down and has hazards switched on, allowing meteor showers to occur.
