[edit] Brief Overview
Asteroid belts, whether natural or unnatural, are in the game -- however, it is unknown as to what extent they can be used. Below are some of the community-proposed functions of asteroid bases.
- Colonies
- SETI observation posts
- Research posts
- Weapons (crashing one into a planet)
- Weapon platforms
- Mining
[edit] Colonies
Space-faring species will most likely be able to colonize larger asteroids. Colonies will probably be limited to domes unless one can terraform asteroids with the UFO. Smaller asteroids may or may not be stable enough to be colonized although an advanced species will probably be able to overcome any limitations. If size is not a problem, then long strings of colonies could stretch across whole asteroid belts.
[edit] SETI Observation Posts
Seti is the Search for Extraterrestrial Life which scans space for radio waves to find intelligent life. Your UFO is equipped with this ability, so a seti posts only virtue is the fact that it might be automated leaving you free to do more exciting tasks.
[edit] Research Posts
It has already been confirmed that the player can find artifacts on abandoned planets that can be used to enhance the UFO. These artifacts may need to be researched, so instead of traveling back to your home planet or another planet under the player's control, they may construct a research post close to where they are exploring.
[edit] Mined for resources/money
Asteroids are essentially metal and debris; it is presumeable these could be mined for resources and traded or used to construct ships or other structures.

The UFO can "swing" comets toward planets to form oceans. This suggests that one could also pull an asteroid from space and crash it into a city. The disaster would probably wipe out any city and the surrounding areas. Interestingly enough, it was shown during a presentation that destroying a planet resulted in the creation of an asteroid belt; this might indicate that asteroids could be used as an endless supply of weaponry.
[edit] Weapon Platforms
Large weapons could be placed on an asteroid in order to defend a region of space or a nearby planet. Platforms could also be constructed as a forward base against an enemy. Any ships attempting to leave your enemy's base would be destroyed. Another possible use would be powerful portable weapons. A large weapon could be constructed on an asteroid and moved into range of the enemy.
