From the City Stage forward, buildings are an important part of the game.

Buildings are created in the Building Editor from a variety of simple shapes that can be morphed, stacked, and intersected.

There are a few different lists of building categories based on the blurry GDC video.

There is also some sort of defense available for buildings, as the alien planet shot at Will's UFO in the GDC video. This could be its own category or simply a feature of advanced buildings. To interact with other cities, the player needs to use Vehicles, which may require a building to produce them.
