Chancellor Mikos Saladot (typically referred to as Chancellor Saladot) is the founder and current Chancellor of the modern Bunsen Grox Republic, and is the head of government and de facto leader of the Republic. Widely regarded as one of the most effective statesmen in modern Bunsen, Saladot was responsible for coalescing scattered republican groups in the outer Bunsen Grox Empire into the influential Republic Restoration Front, which overthrew the Empire and revived the republican tradition in the Core. As its founder and sole head of state since its founding, Saladot is considered the iconic leader of the modern Republic.
Saladot was born to a family of intellectuals on Kerak in 1278 SY, during the height of the Galactic Network Era. While Saladot's family was supportive of Imperial policies, Saladot grew increasingly critical of the Imperial system after his university studies and early military service in patrols in the borderlands, which exposed him to outside perspectives of Bunsen Grox society. However, he mostly kept these criticisms to himself out of fear of retribution, eventually climbing to the prestigious rank of Mariscal in the Imperial Sarissa Marine Corps.
The Core Conflict served as a turning point in Saladot's perspective, viewing the war as a needlessly imperialistic and opportunistic campaign by the Empire. Saladot resigned his commission in 1595 SY after the conclusion of the war and silently went into retirement. After over 20 years of seemingly no activity, Saladot returned to the public eye as a politician, becoming governor of Heogon and Haldair of Heogon Province. Saladot used these positions to form the political network that would later become the Republic Restoration Front in 1778 SY. With help from his daughter Pairi Sola, Saladot successfully secured the support of the Resistance Powers and established the Republic after the fall of the Empire in the First Bunsen War.
Today, Saladot remains a relatively admired figure, restoring many of the freedoms curtailed during the Imperial era and driving the Republic to economic heights unheard of since the old Republic era. However, Saladot's continued reign as Chancellor, now approaching nearly 40 years, has drawn criticism, as while his administration remains widely regarded as effective and responsible, many fear that he may evolve into, or has already become, an "elected dictator."
