[edit] Arms
The arms are the ship’s portions responsible by food generation, recycling of resources and research on new natural composites, destined to the feeding or the production of new materials, and fuels.
These structures, from average length of 60 m, shelter vegetal species of diverse regions of the arackrabees’ known universe. Initially, only the species existing in Ebarkhara had been used in its elaboration. These are grouped in sets defined, consisting of species that share some characteristic.
[edit] Energy
Most of the energy used in the arms is supplied by the solar panels placed around the tunnel, being that a smaller portion comes from the central sphere. This energy then is distributed in the interior of the structure, being used mainly for its illumination. This energy is transmitted throughout long lines that cross all the structure.
[edit] Greenhouses
The great greenhouses constructed in the interior of each one of the arms present species that share common characteristics, being these due to growth form, to generated products or to environment where they develop, being this one the aspect more adopted.
Initially the structure, with its three modules, was elaborated to explore aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric environments, being each one of these represented by these sets of species in each one of the arms:
- Water: Ruvillo, Flobae, Ugampmoss and Hastungi
- Earth: Varchella, Piarqej, Riallastar and Paroppu
- Atmosphere: Conicorn, Acripolegga and Petulle
In virtue of many of these vegetables to form high trees, the space in the interior of the tunnels is great, if compared with the size of the small laborers, main arackrabees to use the tunnels.
Many plants, due to effect of the artificial gravity, the closed environment and the conditions used for its culture, can modify its pattern of development, as it is the case of the Varchella, the main source of pollen and nectar. Due to ambient conditions in the interior of the ship, it produces many roots covered by flowers, which constantly are harvested and renewed.
Species considered dangerous to arackrabees or to other species, as it is the case of the Orosopic and of the Dengiro, are not cultivated in the interior of the ship to prevent future problems and losses in the crew. Moreover, for everything to be possible, a specific environment is created in the interior of each arm, allowing the development of the species contained on them. Adaptations and alterations on the structure and on the way of culture of some vegetables, as it is the case of the Ugampmoss, are done in order to make possible the operation of the greenhouses.
[edit] Illumination
In contrast with the central sphere, the arms don’t have windows and for this reason they need to receive internal artificial illumination. For this, had been developed long lamps made from crystals of fruits are used throughout each one of arms, being three of them in each side of the tunnel.
These lamps assist in the temperature control and allow creating microclimates on the interior of the greenhouses. They are in pairs to long of the structure, being the each one of these in one of the sides. In each one of the sides, it has a set of three lamps of different colors, being these the green, the rose and the orange. When lighted in alternating way and in different intensities they allow the creation of illumination effects to simulate the day and night cycle, besides favoring the development of the plants and the appearance of flowers and fruits, being regulated in accordance with the species in each one of the modules.
A time that they are different, each one of the arms is identified by a system of colors on its access gates (a form of digital panel), made by colored lamps. These lamps also help to monitor the activities in the interior of the greenhouses, being indicated the number of laborers on it, the ambient conditions of each tunnel and operational aspects as temperature, humidity and pressure. Currently three colors are used:
- Green (aquatic greenhouse): apparent water’s color in Ebarkhara
- Brown (earth greenhouse): related to the color of the ground
- Yellow (atmospheric greenhouse): color of Ebarkhara’s sky during the day
[edit] Air Recycle System
This system acts continuously and is independent of energy to operate. It’s based on a set of pipes covered by selective porous membranes that allow the passage of only one type of gas in determined direction. Part of these pipes remains in contact with the environment in the interior of the arms, through small cracks and orifices located in the walls of the tunnel.
Two types of selective membranes, one for the oxygen and another one for the carbon dioxide are used. The oxygen produced by vegetables enters in contact with the walls of the tunnel and enters in the tubing, being then lead to the nucleus and to the laboratories, where the membranes are inverted and they only allow its exit. In the case of the carbon dioxide, this is absorbed by the ducts on the nucleus and on the laboratories, being then eliminated in the interior of the tunnels, where it’s necessary to the development of vegetables.
Between the air pipes don’t exist contact, being that these remain fixed in a support that allows future interventions and maintenances for unstopping and substitution of consumed parts. This system can be observed in the figure, with the ducts of oxygen (light blue) and of carbonic gas (yellow) in the laterals of the tunnel.
[edit] Water Recycle System
This system is very similar to recycle of air, but it has some differences. In contrast with the other system, the water recycle is composed by pipes that allow the circulation of water and nutrients for the interior of the ship; being the pipes fixed on a porous material that allows the water flow between the pipes (the support of setting air system doesn’t allow this exchange).
This system, located in the ceiling and in the bottom of each one of the arms, possesses a porous organic covering, similar to the ground, to allow to the setting and sustentation of the plants roots, besides allowing to the aeration and the water and nutrients circulation, for posterior absorption.
The pipes enriched for nutrients leave the rooms inhabited by arackrabees, such as the laboratories and the central sphere, loading most of the produced dejections. These dejections are dissolved in water, absorbed by the membranes and carried until the greenhouses, where they enter in contact with the artificial ground, being then offered to the plants. At the same time where they are carried, the porous membranes of these pipes allow the water exit by osmosis, taking it until the water pipes, directed to the inhabited compartments.
Part of the humidity and the water vapor in the interior of the arms also is absorbed by the water pipes, being then directed to the sectors of the ship where these are necessary.
These pipes can be visualized in the arms picture, where the pipes responsible by the transport of nutrients are bending and allow a great fluid release (orange) and those charged to transport the water have part of its section concave (blue), in order to facilitate the absorption of the water contained in the interior of the arm.
[edit] Ducts
The water and air pipes act of similar form. Independent of the use of energy to function, the transport of these occurs through concentration gradient, being loaded in the places where the element is in high concentration and unloaded where it is in smaller concentration.
For being confectioned from organic materials that resemble alive structures, as wood, but flexible, the ducts allow to the movement and the regeneration of these in the situations where the modules need to move. This movement occurs in slow way and with care, in order to allow the complete regeneration of the pipes and to hinder that these breach, what it could destroy the systems of supply of water and air.
[edit] Air Filters
These are located in the extremities of the arms, in way that the particles in dispersion don’t be send to the nucleus or the laboratories, unless this is necessary. These filters hold back good part of the pollen and the spores contained in air.
These materials are collected later and used in the renewal of the species in the interior of the greenhouses, allowing the referring replacement of the organisms oldest and tests the crossings between distinct species, what it can or not generate better suitable varieties to definitive ambient conditions and capable to produce diverse products of interest. Part of the restrained material on filters also is used in the food preparation.
