[edit] General
[edit] Appearance
Belottrians (locally called belaatrýa pl. belaatrýat s.) ressemble large upright-standing weasels, and are covered in a short layer of dark green fur, with a white belly. They have relatively long semi-prehensile tails ending with a spike and two grasping hands, which have three digits each. The head of a belottrian tapers, ending in a blunt snout with a pink nose. They have two black eyes located on the sides of thier heads, as well as whiskers and prominant ears that lie flattened against the head. Females are in general larger than males, and have darker and less "glossy" fur coats. Red pseudo-whiskers (somewhere between fur and whiskers) are located both on the snout and back.
The (non-red)whiskers of a belottrian are sensitive, as is its nose. They can detect prey (or other individuals) from a reasonably long distance. Their shortish stubby legs allow them to run at a medium speed, but they prefer ambushing prey (or other individuals) from cover. Their fur can protect them from extreme temperatures, but, like humans, belottrians began to prefer wearing clothes out of modesty apon reaching sapience.
Overall, the average belottrian is shorter and lighter than a human, standing at 160 cm and weighing 40 kg (females) and 150 cm and weighing 35 kg (males).
[edit] Evolution
The species evolved originally in the oceans of Bellotria (their home planet), becoming somewhat otter-like marine mammals early in prehistory. Eventually they began laying eggs on land, then becoming entirely dependant on it and giving live birth. The move from eggs to live young was in fact after establishment on land. In order to catch tree-based food (such as small herbivores inhabiting their planet) better, pre-belottrians with longer legs had an advantage, and the species became bipedal after several million years. It was a bit later then that when the species became sapient.
[edit] Life Cycle and Mating
Belottrians have a relatively long life span, around 90-120 earth years. Baby Belottrians are like smaller versions of thier parents, but are born blind and have darker spotted fur. They reach adolescence by the age of 30, and it is at that time in which they become fertile. Belottrians are monogamous and mate for life, usually reared 4-5 young in a familly network. Pregnancy lasts for 3 earth months in females, at the end of which they give live birth. Few things are instinctive, and much must be taught to a young belottrian by its parents before it can continue in life.
[edit] Planet
Belottria is a medium-sized planet, covered mainly in water. It contains two continents, both of which are covered by thick forest. The eastern continent of Ssýbrrw contains many bays and peninsulas, rendering navigation difficult. The flatter (but just as densely forrested) Kwryaaç continent is smaller but more easiliy navigable. Both contain relitively silimar wildlife, with the origins of the belottrian species most likely coming from Kwryaaç.

[edit] Society and Religion
As it stands the belottrians have an uncentralised network of cities spread across the two continents of thier world, but most follow the same social model, which is that of moderate capitalism under a locally elected ruler (there is no worldwide governement). In the belottrian language this system is known as ýswyssrr wk-rrwçwr or "feudal capitalism" or "localised capitalism", indicating the decentralisation of the economic model.
The belottrian religion is based on the salvation of the soul, and is essentially similar to Christianity. Belottrians must have faith in God (they are monotheistic) and do good in life in order to save thier souls. When they die, they are judged, and those who recieve salvation go to a paradise to be with God. The vast majority (91%) of belottrians follow Jeenism, and all settlements contain religious buildings. 9% are atheists, and refuse to believe that there's an intelligent being out there controlling everything thats going on in the universe and looking down on them, and (ironically) consider everyone else stupid for believing so.
[edit] Language
There are several belottrian languages spoken at local levels, and most share the same VSO (verb-subject-object) word order and alphabet. However the "official" language of inter-communal communication is known as Ysswýl Perçwg, a neutral tongue spoken by no one tribe as a first language. Most sounds produced in the spoken language are impossible for a human to pronounce (including squeaks, growls and purrs) but thanks to a complete coincidence the alphabet ended up ressembling the latin one on a superficial level, though it only includes 14 letters. The following are the alphabet, pronunciations and the first part of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man as it would look translated into the language (this is purely as a standardised example).
