[edit] As a Whole
On Oton IV, there are numerous species of Bumblers. Typically, Bumblers are small two legged amphibians, and are omnivores, feeding on anything they can fit into their mouths. Highly adaptive, they breed quickly and are often seen moving around in small packs of up to 15 individuals. They occasionally hybridize among themselves, but the resulting hybrids are usually sterile.
Though occasionally considered "foolish" due to fact they are known to chase food over cliffs into the sea, they do show some signs of intelligence. While one Bumbler distracts a target, such as a sentient life form at a picnic, with its antics, the rest of the pack will quickly devour as much of the nearby food as possible before the trick is figured out.
[edit] Term
To be called a "Bumbler" is to say that one is foolish, as Bumblers have been seen chasing food off of cliffs, though they themselves usually survive due to their amphibious nature.
To be called a "Baby Bumbler" is to refer someone as young and naive, though in a way that is adorable.
[edit] Species
- Swamp Bumbler
Also known as the Bumbling, this species has evolved to survive in the marshes and bogs of Oton IV. It diet usually consists of tiny amphibians, fish, and crustaceans, though it will also devour the flowers and fruits of the native swamp plants. Excellent swimmers, they use this to their advantage when avoiding land-based predators.
Laying jelly-like egg sacs in the swamps, the parents then abandon them to their fate, though the jelly that covers them makes them nearly impossible to eat as it produces a foul taste. The young Bumblings hatch from the eggs after two weeks, and will then begin to form small packs of around three to five individuals. At the age of three they reach sexual maturity, and will look for a secure area to lay their eggs, which number in the hundreds but are the size of an earth penny.
- Mountain Bumbler
Also known as the Bumblix, this species has evolved to survive on the mountains of Oton IV. Its diet usually consists of the fruit of the numerous trees in the surrounding area, though they will also eat small mammals. Their feet have excellent traction, allowing them to rapidly ascend and descend mountain sides when avoiding larger predators.
They lay a mass of small soft-shelled eggs in small dens along the mountain side, especially near the valleys. The adults guard the dozens of eggs, and when they hatch within about three weeks, the younglings will join the adult pack until they mature within four years, after which they will leave in search of new pack and a mate so that they may continue the species.
- Cave Bumbler
Also known as the Bumblon, this species has evolved a nocturnal lifestyle and thrives within the caves of Oton IV. Its diet usually consists of numerous insects, reptiles, and mammals that live within its caves, and those of the surrounding fields, though they will also eat tubers, roots, and fungi. They have excellent night vision, and a primitive form of echolocation. This allows it to thrive within its cave systems, and to help it find food, especially in the surrounding fields at night.
They lay jelly-like masses of eggs in fungi formations, and then the parents will guard the eggs till they hatch. After about two weeks, the young hatch and then fend for themselves, living solitary lives. When they mature at about one year, they will find a mate, lay a batch of about a dozen eggs the size of earth golf balls, and then repeat the process their parents performed before them and so on for generations.
- Coastal Bumbler
Also known as the Blumblug, this species has evolved to survive along the coastlines of Oton IV. Its diet usually consists of crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and other carcasses that may wash ashore, though they also feed on seaweed. Capable of limited swimming, they are known to travel from island to island when food supplies get low.
They lay soft-shelled eggs the size of earth marbles within rotting logs farther away from the shore, and will then abandon them to their fate. The eggs hatch after five week, and the young then form pairs with other nests before searching for food. After about a year, they are ready to mate and thus continue the species.
- Forest Bumbler
Also known as the Bumblork, this species has evolved to thrive in the forested areas of Oton IV. Its diet consists of berries, fruits, nuts, seeds, and plant matter, though it will also eat small mammals, insects, and reptiles if given the chance. It has decent camouflage in order to hide among the trees and bushes when avoiding predators.
They lay hard-shelled eggs the size of an earth baseball within holes in trees. The eggs are laid in groups of three, and when they hatch three weeks later, the young stick together, forming a mini pack before eventually joining a normal one. They become sexually mature within two years.
- Polar Bumbler
Also known as the Bumblest, this species has evolved to survive on the tundra plains of the northern continent of Oton IV. Their diet consists of small mammals and dead carcasses, though they will eat seeds as well. It is the only species to have evolved wings, and uses them to glide across the frozen grasslands.
They give birth to live young, usually twins, and care for them intensely. The young stay with the parents for about a year before flying off on their own. They will be able to mate after about one year.
