Introduction The Ferafan (Pronounced fair-off-en), are carnivourous bird-like creatures native to the planet Ixiom. They are very intelligent but proud and do not take defeat easily. They do not question the morality of their actions, leading many to belive that they do not care about others. They are about 1 1/3 feet tall, with small grey legs ending in talons. They have a wingspan of about three feet. Their wings are dark brown, and they have long yellow beaks.

[edit] Biology
The Ferafan began as cells with 4 leg appendages with a long spike at the front of their bodies. They had 4 eyes, two on top of their head and two in front. Because of this configuration they were always observing the sky so it is no suprise that they eventually became birds capable of flight. After several million years they became manta-like creatures that flew through water. Their two upper eyes slowly fused into one and got lowered down significantly on their head. They eventually moved on to land, and went through a stage as lizard like creatures. During this stage they grew short wings on their backs and after another million years became fully fledged birds. They slowly shifted into bipedal creatures and their wings became shorter and the end feathers became hard and turned into manipulators. Now they are short creatures, only 1 1/3 feet tall. Their wings are 3 feet long and a dark shade of brown. They have grey legs that end in sharp talons that help the Ferafa grip the Reknew trees that are scattered throughout their villages. Their front two eyes have excellent vision and their upper eye has evolved a method of thermal vision. The use this to assist them in their night hunts. They have golden-yellow beaks that curve down and have small, sharp bumps along the edges that function like teeth. The Ferafa have large, well devolped brains in their head. However, their skulls are not very thick, so they are particulary vulnerable to blows to the head. A Ferafan has two hearts, and three lungs. The Ferafan mainly feed on small animals and bugs, but in times of famine they will eat fruit.
[edit] Beliefs
Religon is a major factor in Ferafan life. The Ferafan have one major religion that revolves around the worship of three gods. Thes, a sea god, Thos, a land god, and Thas, a sky god. The three gods were supposedly created at the beggining of time and were brothers. They are said to have made Ixiom with their divine powers. There are many ancient tales of the three gods fighting giants and other monsters. The Ferafan believe that every Ferafan is handcrafted by the god Thes, watched over in life by Thos, and when they die, they go to a heaven ruled by Thas. The Ferafan once shared their world with another sentinent species who were considered to be created by a rogue god called Yatta. Worship usually calls for a multitude of prayers and the occasional fast. There are sveral holidays on the Ferafan calender. Most revolve much fasting and giving gifts. There are few churches on Ixiom, instead masses gather in forests for services. There are priests who deliver services and Grand Priests above them. The color of the Church is green and the holy symbol is three diamonds crossing to make an odd star. The construct is known as the Star and is found almost everywhere in Ferafan construction. Suprisingly, the Church also is the primary source of scientific advances to the Ferafan. This is because the Church believes that becoming more advanced will get the species closer to their gods.

The Ferafan are ruled by an emperor or empress with almost absolute power. The title is hereditary and usually given to the oldest son. If something happens to the oldest son it is given to the next oldest child, regardless of gender. The ruler has an advisory council of elected officials below them made up of representitives from the Church, millitary, and govenors. The imperial family has been the same since it started as a tribe. The family name is Teryer. They have a reputation for being kind and just, but great tacticians and strategists. Blue is the royal color, and it is everywhere in the Imperial palace. The Emperor has a personal craft, which has changed as time goes on (i.e. a ship when sailing was big and now a spacecraft.) but is always the cutting edge of technology.

The Ferafan Armed Forces is incredibly large, with nearly 1/3 the population on active duty. There are three branches of the Armed Forces, the Army (land and water combat), the Navy (air and space combat) and Agency (espionage and sabotage). Each branch is headed by a veteran officer with years of experience. During wartime, the whole empire's economy is changed to production of war materials. During peace a huge stockpile of weapons and soldiers is kept up. In ancient times the weapon of choice was a spear and even today troops are armed with high-voltage steel electro-spears. Ferafan weapons evolve around the manipulation of electricity. There are electro-rifles, electro-armor, electro-grenades, and much more. A side-effect is the high mortality rate from damaged weapons. Ferafan strategy often involves surrounding enemies and then letting loose with massive firepower.
