[edit] Physical Discription
The Kiarians are three and a half foot tall bird-like creatures with rosy violet feathers that differ in normal form(usual state) depending on tribe origin and genectics. They have rather short beaks (inbetween that of an owl and a parrot) and have a long crest that falls diagionally past the back of the head. Kiarians tie up this creast with a loop of ribbon or cloth that is usually solid in color but depends on the tribe. At the end of the crest the feathers kind of burst out.
Kiarians pocess the abily to change their color by turning their feathers,(similar to the way we get goosebumps) which on some sides have dark colors and some sides have light colors. There are four different colors that any one feather can be, to add to greater diversity each area on the body has slightly different color shades, some feathers around the eyes, and slight tufts above their eyebrows have iridescent hues.
Female Kiarians are much more robust and atheletic when compared to the male much like Earth birds of prey. For this reason male Kiarians in general tend to farms growing crops and the females are swordfighters for the armies.
Kiarians only have three fingers and no thumbs but on the inner skin on these fingers are clinging skin similar to that of a earthbound gecko. Females naturally pocess this grip which comes in handy when carrying swords. On the feet of a Kiarian are only two broadish toes.
[edit] Culture & Tribes
Kiarians have many tribes, all tribes worship the same god, Kar-ka who in legend created four Kiarians for each of the eight tribes and all the animals that dwelled in Kiar. Each of the tribes also has an alternate add on to the legend, which most say was how their four ancesters saw it.
The Kairians of the dark primarily carnivorous Karirthara are a sinister race and do not worship the Kiarain god. They also steal children from other tribes to do things ttaht other tribes can only vaqualy guess. The U.P.N. suspects possible genectic mutaion of the hapless children or at least surpistious 'sorcery'.
There are eight tribes of Kiarian, Irvaid's, Liitiney's, Franantii's, Stertain's, Linninvor's, Kerta's, Therta's, and Karirthara's tribe. The tribes are so-named for their current govenor although they are also given the classical names wich are the mixed names of the first anscestors for that tribe.
Inbetween the Tribes are long trails of carved stone and other markers like driftwood from the otherland(a place beyond the Kar-ka sea) with colorful dyed ribbons that match those of the native tribe. Each tribe has a few 'main borders which are heacily guarded and a few 'skirt borders' which are usually naturally defended by water, deserts and such. Along the trail to a tribe there are market places where goods from one tribe are given to another . These marketplaces usually are open yearound and deliver goods to their homelands monthly to bi-monthly ( depending on current events).
[edit] Tribal Symbols and Swords
Most female Kiarians dream of being a top swordfighter of an elite squadron. Based on athlectics in early school(will be discussed later) they could be chosen for the junior practice squad and make it to their tribes army. Kairians value swords highly both male and female Kiarians can be swordsmiths(as they are called) which is the highest honor for a blacksmith which can become a very high-paying job in Kiar.
The blacksmiths design many different forms of swords each to perform a certain purpose. Swords are also created to match the user(or perhaps the user to match the sword), for example a thin fast njer (ninja/warrior) will be given a light sword so they can run with it and deliver quick blows. On contrast a powerful Kiarian will be granted a heavy sword to better fit their strength. That's probably the simplest way for me to put it though as th Kiarian's are a very personal species.
Along with different swords Kiarian's have different flags, but this time to match whole armies or tribes. Each tribe was deignated a certain color eons ago. Below is each tribe and thir color. Note: The tribe color is the same as the ribbon that is worn by female tribe member's color.
Irvaid's:burgundy
Liitiney's: light brownish green
Therta's:solid orange
Linningvor's: teal
Stervain's:Dark brown
Fanatii's: violet
Kerta's: dark dull yellow
Karirthara;s:black, plain solid black
[edit] School and Youngsters
All Kiarians are required to go to school. In school they learn about Kiarian hisory, how to count, (very very basic)and physical education. Depending on the region they may also learn about which animals are good and which are bad, they usually learn the same thing about plants. At home their parents usually teach them their job, housekeeping, and how to read scrolls. At age twelve though Kiarians get to choose what proffession they wish to take and go to college and have to only learn what they need to for their job.
Before the age of twelve, usually around ten or nine the tribe's goverment helds tryouts at shool to be in the kids' pratice squadron for the army.Kids at the tryouts aren't solely passed on there performance for whatever that challenge that day may be but on teacher recomendations and athlectics score from gym class.
Physically, young Kiarians are much like the adults but in a more mini form. They are usually have differently colored than thier adult forms, usually either a craem color or a dark slate color. Young Kiarains have a tendacy to change their shade of their color accidentally which is emparassing to them, they get better control of this when mid-teenagers. They also grow their first iridesant feathers when teenagers.
Kiarains grow slowly at first but once they are half-way through the teanage cycle they increase in growing speed and slow down again once adult. Young Kiarains are playful and enjoy oraganized recreation like sports and tag.
[edit] Transportation and Farming
Many male Kiarians are excellant farmers and have to trek many miles along travel routes to markets between two tribes.Luckily for the farmers there are many native farm animals that can be used to pull heavy cargo some like the male house Gorpo are used like earth oxen to pull carts female house Gorpos are dramaticly different and can be compared to horses. Female House Gorpos are usually riden for delivering messages and foods between houses, though as they are frigtened by the shine of swords and aren't too brave are not raised for battle.
That this probably the easiest way I can make it sound as it is a grueling trip as Kiar is a dry very elevated world with sandstorms, occassional rain, and arid heat. All this makes the trip somewhat grueling but the slim body of the male Kiarian is light and agile. A seasoned traveler is those and more. That is unfortunately only half of it growing the crops is pretty difficult to do.
Since Kiar is so dry with water so scarce farmers have to use locally native plants. Even these plants have trouble growing in most places, let alone generating a cash crop, or even enough to feed the family. That is why Kiarian farmers have samll wells in their backyards decorated with stone. Even so they can't just use this water willy nilly, they mainly collect water from the wells during the wet season and times and store that water for use during drought.
Below are examples of common farm plants, their uses, and their native range:
Common Sucagus: long lived plant that grows upright with buddish leaves and thick stems, leaves and stem good sources of water and vitamains, native to dry soils in the Irvaid's tribe area.
Tortalm: woody stemed plant with bushy top, leaves used in soups and root tubers common snacks in times of drought, grows around the Kar-Ka river.
River Violet-Top: grassy bamboo/papyrus palent with bi-yearly flowers, used to make scrolls and parchment flowers adorn fancy salads, native on the east side of the Kar-ka river.
Pineapple Brictus: wide cactus-like low growing plant, cores are common dishes and taste tangy like pineapples, most areas except heavy mountains.
Short-horned Brictus: a large wide brictus with small yellow and curly spines, spines soft and salty when steamed, along the northeast coast.
Wooly Brictus: short and broad bricti covered in fuzzy down, used mainly for cloth production although it is edible, all along the eastern coast.
Kiarians not only farm plants but animals to such as Torhens which lay unfertilized eggs when kept from males. Farms also breed several types of Gorpos to keep a steady supply. Kiarians may also breed certain forms of pets such as the Slobbering Gorpo or Yellow-spotted Gorpo but only occassionally. Generally farms do not breed animalse for meat, except for the devious Karirthara's tribe.
[edit] Wars and History
Kiarians have a rather rickety and uneasy history. The tribes have constant, 'minor wars' and quarrels over land and resouces and even stupider things. Kiarians have so many wars that they usually look back at their history without much thought except for how a tribe won it.
Kiarians may seem like a fighting species but since the land in Kiar is so 'unfertile' any good spots are greedily stolen. I like to think as them as Japanese ninjas from the old times with spys and things like that.
There was a very major war in Kiar howerver, a two decades ago. The war was so bad that the Kiarians broke the biggest code, loyalty and placing their tribe first which is the most important rule to the Kiarians. But that was the only way thee awar could have been stopped, each side of kiar , the east and west became one great tribe. The sides were nearly equal and everyone was dyling, the polpulatiion of each was cut in half when suddenly the East had an edge and nearly killed off the other side.
That was when a large group known plainly as 'the weeders' rebeld against their tribes in the west and started a revolution. After three years of more battles the east and west seperated into eight tribes again and everything was back to the second code "the original balance". The Kiarians have had so many battles that many are competely forgotten by now, yes they have had that many.
