Natura hetero is the only species of its genus. Its most distinguishing characteristic is the dietary variation between members of the opposite gender. Males are carnivorous and females are strictly herbivorous. Its home planet is Demadesco (Latin: "wet"). It can be found living in almost any type of terrain and in waters as far out as the reach of the Continental Shelf. It is well suited for flight as well as a bipedal of aquatic lifestyle, making the males the apex predator in nearly any environment. Similarly, females of the species are typically the most socially adept species in a given environment.

Male Naturas sport mouths similar to those of Earth's whales and eat meat. Females have tusks and their mouths more closely resemble those of walruses. Their diet consists primarily of fruits and seaweeds. Both sexes possess large wings as well as flukes and dorsal fins similar to those found on Earth's whales. Also like whales, Naturas can use echolocation. They lack blowholes, however, and and have the ability to smell.

Naturas are a very religious and curious species. While zealous, Naturas will generally not attack another race because of relgious differences alone. Instead Naturas strive to convert other empires. Being an amphibious species, Naturas seek moist planets to colonise and will even pass up a chance to colonise a planet with rare spice if its environment isn't wet enough and they're unable to terraform it.

[edit] Evolutionary History

The cellular ancestors of Naturas were equipped with both jaws and filter mouths, capable of eating both plants and other cells. It would not be until late in their evolutionary history that Naturas developed their signature pronounced sexual dimorphism.

Equipped with small Beady Eyes and only its Jaws for weapons, the ancestors of the Natura were slow grazers and at times ambush predators, waiting for herbivorous cells to start feeding on Small Plant Matter before going in for the kill.

This method of aquiring food proved to be very inefficient, however. Over time, the cells grew in size and evolved a Flagellum to increase their speed. The cells remained ambush predators but were able to outmanuever predators more easily.

Over time other organisms began to evolve specialized weapons such as the Spike, Poison and Electric parts. They also evolved to become more speedy with Cilia and Jets. Natura's ancestors took a different approach; they moved to shallower water and began feeding on eggs. It wasn't until shortly before Natura's ancestors became amphibious that they developed Cilia.

Most of Natura's aquatic ancestors died out due to their lack of speed and specialization. Those that survived stayed near the shore where they could blend into the sand and hide and have a readily available food supply of eggs. It wasn't long after they developed Cilia, though, that they began their venture onto land. Better late than never, Natura's amphibious ancestors developed a Jet. They also evolved Brawnysaurus legs. Legs, Jet, Flagellum, and Cilia together allowed the newly evolved amphibious organism to jump, sprint short distances, and sneak as needed to catch prey.

The next evolutionary stage for Natura's ancestors began when a mutation caused its Cilia to split into two pairs. It was also around this time that Natura's ancestors began to show sexual dimorphism. Females developed bright coloring to better attract mates. Males became more camouflaged to better hunt prey and to help them ambush any predators that might try to eat their females. They also developed Bonekneepads to supplement their violent lifestyles. This was the complete reverse of the way sexual dimorphism developed on Earth, but females of the ancestral species developed Featherblusters to help them socialize with other species, thus compensating for their lack of natural defenses.

I know some of the stuff I describe in the profile isn't actually possible in Spore, such as my creature being able to live in water, having different mouthparts depending on the sex, etc. Hopefully once Spore gets some expansion packs I can actually do that stuff.
