Pexes were one of the two Paxian races. They lived mainly on the beaches of Pax and their diet consisted of mostly fish and fruit. One of their distinctive features was the unique shape of their bodies. They were covered in short browns fur and had longer hair of varying colors on both parts of their bodies that faced up. Pexes also had long vibrissae on their mouths, which they could use to sense their surroundings. They could learn most languages, but preferred to speak their own.

[edit] Biology and Appearance
The name given to the shape of pexes’ bodies was simply “pexoid”. Their strong, two-jointed legs were very long and their bodies hung down from their hips. Near the top of their bodies were three simple eyes, one larger than the rest, and an ear that could swivel to hear sounds better. On the end of their bodies was a large mouth. This mouth had eight lips arranged in a radial pattern and one tusk per lip. There were many teeth inside, designed for chewing flesh, such as that of an animal or piece of fruit. Hanging from the mouth were six vibrissae, which were used as sensory organs. Two arms were located just behind the mouth. These arms were very simple, having one elbow each. Their hands consisted of three opposable digits, each having suction cups, arranged in a circle around a retractable claw. Their feet were similar, looking like starfish with three points each. Pexes’ skin was covered by brown fur and, in two places, hair of various colors.
The digestive system of the pexes was very simple. It consisted of an esophagus, a stomach, and and intestine. These went in a straight line from the mouth to the anus. The entire digestive process took about half of a day.
The brain was behind the eyes and were in the hips, which were shaped to act like a skull. The five senses of pexes were sight, sound, touch, taste, and the extra sense they gained from their vibrissae. Unlike many sentients, pexes had no sense of smell.
Their lungs and heart were placed in the part of their body that was approximately parallel to their legs. They breathed through their mouth and ear.
The reproductive system was in the lower part of the body, above the digestive system. For females, it consisted of a uterus, ovaries, and a vagina. The vagina faced the hips and had a clitoris on the side of the vagina further from the mouth. Males had two internal testes, a prostate, and a penis that stayed inside the body when flaccid. When aroused, the male’s penis extended out of his body. To mate, pexes let their bodies hang perpendicular to the ground and stand in front of each other. The female is pregnant for about one Paxian year. The baby would then be nursed by its mother or another female, drinking milk from the two nipples on the underside of the pex.
[edit] Society and Culture
Main article: Paxian
Paxian culture was made up of pexes and the other race of sentients from Pax, dexes. One thing that stood out about the Paxians was the casualness they attached to sexuality. Paxian scientists developed and introduced to the pex and dex gene pools two genes that serve the purpose of population control. It caused female pexes and dexes to ovulate only twice in their lives. An unforeseen side-effect caused this ovulation to have no physical symptoms. To keep the population alive, female Paxians could have undergone bothersome tests each day or have sexual intercourse each day. Paxian society chose the latter, and sex soon became part of most Paxians’ daily routines. It was only a matter of time before public sex was socially acceptable. When a female pex or dex was ovulating, she felt a physical attraction only to males with good genes, but otherwise there seemed to be no discrimination of who could or could not be a Paxian’s partner. In fact, sex with other sentients was almost as common as with the same species.
Because neither Paxian race separated into tribes, they never really had religions so much as misguided science. Because of this, some other sentients to viewed them as immoral. However, most Paxians were kind and generous, as they were taught from a very young age to treat others as they wished to be treated. Although some cultures looked down on them, most admired Paxians.
[edit] History
Pexes and their ancestors lived on the shores of Montis Minora, a continent on Pax, for millenia. They didn’t migrate very much, and their entire society evolved there. Eating fish and fruit from the nearby forest, and drinking water from natural springs in the forest, they built huts and larger buildings out of bales of dried seaweed and mud from inland. The population continued to grow, and eventually pexes inhabited the entire coast of Montis Minora and had to move into the forest. They found that another race of sentients had evolved right next to them, the dexes. Neither group thought the other was intelligent at first, but each learned the other’s language and realized its sentience. It was clear that the pexes had larger brain capacities and that the dexes were very good at making things. Both had skills that the other could use, and the two races formed an alliance. They soon grew to be one culture and covered all of Montis Minora. The language that has come to be known as Paxian was a combination of Pexian and Dexese.
It was as one culture that the two races began to truly prosper. With the dexes’ dexterity and the pexes’ knowledge, they were able to build cities and large ships. They explored the world, and though they found no more sentient life, they found specimens of wildlife that was unlike anything they had ever seen. They mapped out the entire world and established cities on each major continent. It was some time before they mastered space travel that scientists introduced the gene that inadvertently caused sexuality to become an integral part of Paxian culture.
The Paxians then moved into space. They discovered a strange craft on the planet Kepytha, which was also in the Maurnus System. The craft had technology that they had never seen before, but they figured out how to use it. It had hyperspeed drive and a device that could pick up radio waves light-years away. The Paxians entered the cosmic stage in a time of peace, and were able to form many alliances with other cultures.
Within a century, the newly named Maurnus Sector was governed by the Paxian Federation and contained over one hundred star systems. This sector had been considered a wild part of space, but was soon recognized as a civilized area.
