Solar Position: 4th from the star Voresh.
Water %: 75% or greater
Climate: A relatively calm climate, with few climate-caused natural disasters. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and whirlwinds are relatively rare, while thunder storms are heard often in the spring and autumn months; even more so around the equator. Meteors fall often, but are usually small and inconsequential, posing little threat. Comet collisions are very rare, while no asteroid impact has yet been recorded.
Water Content: The surface is covered in 75% or more water, with at least 3 continents, and a number of islands dotting the relatively-tranquil surface.
Habitability: Very habitable. Mostly tropical temperatures, with moderately-sized bands of temperate temperatures closer to the poles. Frigid (arctic) zones are relatively small.

[edit] Continents

[edit] Zeeon

The continent Zeeon, the land the Aurix call home. Nearby marine biomes not shown.

Dominant Species: Tentacleiosaurs
Zeeon is generally considered the main continent on the surface of Vuunega; however, it is certainly not the only continent on the planet, as the rockscales that wash up on the beaches of southern Zeeon come from somewhere else. Zeeon is a diverse continent, possessing a large number of biomes. The southern coasts of Zeeon lie near the equator of Vuunega, allowing for tropical climates that allow koryl reefs and jungles to thrive.

[edit] Zorgen

Dominant Species: Unknown
Zorgen is another continent, residing relatively close to the Zeeon continent. Unlike its neighbor, Zorgen is made up of one large "mainland", and several very large islands, as it has been split recently, in geological terms. Zorgen is the homeland of the xenosurid catapult trees, which wash ashore as buoyant seeds on not only Zeeon, but the many islands in-between.

[edit] Somaria

Dominant Species: Unknown
A third continent exists, although like Zorgen, it is not common knowledge to the Aurix quite yet. Virtually nothing is known about Somaria, and it is therefore considered a 'lost world', although whether or not life thereon would amount as 'lost species' remains to be seen.

[edit] Unique Genera

[edit] Anthoids

An Urn Koryl, a species of anthoid.

Class: Anthoides ("Flower Like")
Anthoids are a class of marine invertebrates, consisting of the Koryls as well as two sea anemone-like groups. All three types of Anthoids are known to reside off the coast of Zeeon; the most famous species being the Urn Koryl in the Koryl Reef off Southern Zeeon, where the Squillix made their colonies for a short time.

[edit] Armored Cats (Ankylofelids)

Clade: Ankylofelis
Ankylofelines are a family of sabertoothed felids who evolved strong armors to cover parts of their body. Most ankylofelines have only the front half of their bodies covered in armor, although other types are known to exist. Ankylofelines are known to exhibit sexual dimorphism.

[edit] Carnotheriums

Genus: Carnotherium
The Carnotheriums have adapted a body structure somewhat reminiscent of the elephants of Earth. However, very much unlike the elephant, the carnotherium has evolved into a powerful carnivore. Their heavily-muscled trunks sport a huge bone scythe, which they use as their main weapon. Their tusks also grow differently, as they cannot use their trunks as a manipulation tool, like elephants can, due to the placement of their weapon. Their ears are also different; they are formed out of thick, bulging objects that are covered in fine, sensitive hairs to operate like ears, rather than being true ears.

[edit] Clackers (Clackenostids)

A Green Clacker, a species of Clackenosteus.

Genus: Clackenosteus
Opportunistic predators with a gluttonous appetite, clackers are demersal ichthyoids who will eat anything they can fit in their mouths, including other clackers. It is rare to find a clacker with an empty stomach, as they will commonly eat again before their last meal has passed entirely through the stomach. Although neither swift nor agile, clackers are possibly the most heavily-armored ichthyoids in the seas of Vuunega. Most of this armor makes up the skull, but they are balanced with heavy bones through their body; however they are still fairly top-heavy, and are luckily very powerful swimmers to counteract this.

Clackers do not possess teeth; instead they use a pair of long, sharpened, bony plates formed from their skull armor that is capable of easily slicing through flesh and snapping or crushing bones or shells, allowing them a varied diet.

The clackers are known for possessing some of the most powerful bites delivered by ichthyoid on Vuunega, and can transfer approximately 5,500 psi along the tip of their jaws. However, unlike crocodiles on Earth, clackers can also open their jaws extremely fast, believed to be as fast as one-fourtieth of a second. This causes a powerful vacuum effect which can suck prey into the mouth, and is used as the main method of food-capturing in the clacker genus.

[edit] Cnidomecia

Clade: Cnidomecium
Cnidomecia (singular form = cnidomecium) are a genus of microscopic protistoids resembling to paramecium. They are known and named for their sets of cnidocytes which are found on their bodies. These cnidocytes are generally used for defense as opposed to offense, due to the amount of energy it takes them to regenerate one after it is used, as each cnidocyte can only be used once before having to be reabsorbed by the body and regenerated.

Cnidomecium are far deadlier than their paramecium counterparts, and are known to possess greater speed and maneuverability, as well as various other adaptations. One such evolution is their basic tendrils which extend out of their body: although many only possess one pair of these, it is not uncommon for some species to have as many as ten surrounding their body. These organisms use their tendrils to latch on to prey better for an easier kill.

They are generally a marine species, found in various tide pools the world over, usually in close conjecture with other protistoids; however, several species of freshwater cnidomecia are also known. They are fairly common, but no known terrestrial cnidomecia exist.

[edit] Docusopsis

Clade: Unspecified
The Docusopsids, or "Beam Faces", are a species of dinosaurid that are known to inhabit open areas on Vuunega, but no other areas. This is because of the very wide, stalk-like extension that the major eyes reside on at the tips. Where this would normally cause a huge blindspot directly in the middle of the vision area, docusopsids have developed a row of several eyes that line the entire front of this structure. Oddly enough, this makes them powerful hunters, but luckily they are not as vicious as other, more powerful predators, and generally will only attack non-prey creatures if they feel threatened, such as when near their nests. Groups of 10-100 docusopsids gather together in nesting colonies, where they help to protect one another and their young. Sexual dimorphism exists in this species, with the males' stalks being at least twice as long as a females, for display purposes.

[edit] Dryptoscelidans

Clade: Unspecified
Spider-likes are strangely absent from most of the Vuunegan biomass, and in their place have risen other arachnidans, such as the spinsters and their close relatives. These creatures are called dryptoscelidans, or "wounding hindlegs". Dryptoscelidans have highly adapted legs, which aid them in hunting their prey. Many walk on four of their legs, and have one hind leg heavily enhanced into a weapon built on the top of their body, with the other three legs adapted for specific uses, depending on the family the species belongs to.

[edit] Gabrolites

Species Type: Cephalopoid

[edit] Muscle Slugs

Species Type: Spinomollusk

[edit] Saprolites

Species Type: Cephalopoid

[edit] Sidetails (Pleurouruses)

Order: Pleurourus
What sharks are to the planet Earth, sidetails are to Vuunega. The sidetails are a genera of typically large, carnivorous, lobe-finned ichthyoids. They are roughly triangular in shape, with the tapered end being the tail. Being lobe-finned ichthyoids, they bear a passing similarity to sarcopterygii, and can therefore be associated to Earth's lungfish and coelocanths, even though they didn't evolve on the same world. Much like sharks, sidetails are cold-blooded; however, they use a specific style of nervous system that warms their blood for them. All sidetails possess between three and four pairs of fins, with the final set being converted into feeding "arms" in certain species, such as the Dibranchioidae.

Sidetails are very intelligent, and some, namely the Murkdweller (a koryl reef variety), use their cunning to catch even some of the most vicious prey in the sea, which would otherwise act as predators to them.

[edit] Spiralites

Species Type: Cephalopoid

[edit] Tripod Birds

A Skullbeak, a species of Tripediornis.

Family: Tripediornis ("Three Footed Bird")
Tripod Birds evolved from ratite-like Vuunegan avids millions of years ago, and have filled several niches since, but most are large and ungainly creatures. Although for the most part they continue to possess the abilities for flight, many choose to remain fully-terrestrial creatures unless the situation is dire. In general, Tripod Birds are slower than their quadrupedal cousins.

[edit] Xenosurans

Species Type: Arthrophysids
Xenosurans are an order of arthrophysids. Most xenosurans are benthic species, although many also live their entire lives on the shoreline, where they wet their gills with the local seawaters in order to breathe on land. Almost all xenosurans feed on small organisms buried in the sediment or sand of their local terrain, sifting through it with their specially-designed mandibles. Certain species, like those related to the Crawlers of Zeeon, have a two-pronged caudal spine, which in some species carries venom to protect it against predators. Xenosurans also possess paddles, either to help it swim about or to help it dig in their silty/sandy environments. As the latter function, it is a multi-purpose tool, able to allow the xenosuran to burrow a little into the ground to help it from being flipped over, to bury eggs (in some species), or to dig up hidden prey.

[edit] Zeeon's Indigenous Inhabitants

The species listed below are creatures that are either known to still exist, or creatures with their own SporeWiki pages.

[edit] Open Ocean

[edit] King of Swimmers

Conservation Status: Endangered
Binominal Name: Unspecified
The King of Swimmers (the name is both plural and singular, much like the word "sheep") are very large omniceti Wikipedia:Cetacea cetacids, which reach a maximum length of 110ft -- they are the largest creature on all of Vuunega. Having evolved brains before bulk, the KoS are exceptionally brilliant, and possess no known natural predators. This allows them to swim freely through the oceans of the world and harass the marine biomes; luckily, they cannot enter too shallow of water, and must stay in at least 100ft deep water or risk beaching themselves. Sparsely populated with long gestation periods, they travel in packs of five, called a geddon. As they are indeed mammalian in nature, they are required to constantly search for food, and are built specifically to be able to consume nearly any organism they can no matter the type -- unfortunately, this commonly destroys entire ecosystems, forcing them to spend months or even years to repair the damage caused.

[edit] Zrrmzasha

Conservation Status: Threatened
Binominal Name: Unspecified
Zrrmzasha are an offshoot of the Aurixan genome, which split off during the Squillia Period. Left behind by their brethren, they were forced through an unknown event to quickly adapt themselves into reptiloids, ultimately becoming icthyosaurian in nature in a relatively short amount of time. Although they initially fed on ichthyoids, cephalopoids, and spinocephalopods using a beak-like mouth, time has been kind to them, and they have gained a whorl-tooth, making them far-deadlier adversaries.

[edit] Vuukelp Forest

[edit] Green Clacker

Conservation Status: Extinct
Binominal Name: Clackenosteus apatochlorus
Green Clackers were armored ichthyoids, reaching an adult length of approximately 10ft and a final weight of about 2 tons. Despite their green skin coloring, they lived mainly in Red Vuukelp Forests; although unconfirmed, this may have played a factor in their extinction. Green Clackers were capable of opening their mouth quickly to create a vacuum that sucked prey into their awaiting jaws. Green Clackers possessed some of the thickest armor known to have ever existed on Vuunega, located on their head and forming the skull.

[edit] Murkdweller

Conservation Status: Unknown
Binominal Name: Dibrachioidae tyrannovenator
Murkdwellers are armor-plated pleurouri who patrol the koryl reefs of Southern Zeeon, and serve as a top predator of these biomes, replacing the positions large sharks generally hold on Earth. Despite being ichtyoids, they are warm-blooded, and attack prey with globs of acidic phlegm. They are opportunists, and will even consume their own predators if the chance arises. To do so, they have evolved a large brain to help in surviving such encounters. Like the Green Clackers, Murkdwellers can create a vacuum by opening their mouths quickly. Murkdwellers are also mouthbrooders.

[edit] Koryl Reef

[edit] Chlorolomba

Conservation Status: Threatened (Wild), Not Threatened (In Hosts)
Binominal Name: Unspecified
A species of colonial Vuunegan Wikipedia:Algae alga, the Chlorolomba are somewhat resistant to oceanic temperatures, and can travel pretty much anywhere in tropical waters; however, they must remain near or above the surface of the water to photosynthesize, which makes them vulnerable. This helped cause their near-extinction, during which a small colony of Chlorolomba drifted into the tidal pool that the Zocax happened to inhabit. The alga was not above using other organisms to further its own survival, and they took a large number of Zocaxi as their permanent hosts. It was this species that forever split the Zocax into the Aurii and the Neouii within only a few generations, creating the eventual Aurix and Neomwa strains. The Chlorolomba were one of the original species to have survived the Great Cataclysm, but they were far less capable back then, and didn't even have their own style of movement (Chlorolomba undulate their own bodies slightly to allow them to move, albeit incredibly slowly). The Chlorolomba inhabit nearly all of the offshoots of the Aurix, with the exception of the Vrenna, who ejected them millennia ago.

[edit] Zrrnigor

Conservation Status: Near Threatened
Binominal Name: Unspecified
An offshoot of the Zrrmzasha strain, the Zrrnigors returned to land (which the Zrrmzasha spent a small amount of time on before quickly returning to the ocean). As if through backwards evolution, they have re-evolved feet and have since become nothosaurids. They spend much of the morning basking in the sun on the tropical sandy beaches of Southern Zeeon, with their specialized ribs extended to make use of their symbiotes. During the afternoon and some of the night, they enter the waters and swim to the koryl reef, where they hunt ichtyoids and other smaller game. Despite eating small prey like their Zrrmzashan cousins, the Zrrnigor have evolved incredibly sharp, scissor-like jaws, which could easily shear a man's arm in half.

[edit] Tidal Pools

[edit] Diatak

Conservation Status: Extant -- Not Threatened
Binominal Name: Diatak tyrannovenator "Tyrant Hunter"
The evolutionary next step to the weak Dessiles, the Diataks were transformed into formidable foes with a voracious appetite and a swarm mentality. Possessing a good deal of offense, defense, speed, and appetite, the Diataks became a huge problem for microscopic life during the Cnidomeria Period, during which many prominent races of the time went extinct. Although not a true mass extinction, it was a crisis that earned its place as the end of the Cnidomeria. Although they seem to still live - now out around the Vuukelp Forests all over the world - they seem to have calmed down quite a bit, although the reasons are not yet known. If food cannot be found, the Diataks are still capable of using photosynthesis. A huge swarm of frenzied Diataks is known as the Blood Tide.

[edit] Sandy Beach

[edit] Crawler

A Crawler, a species of Xenosuran.

The Crawlers are a perfect example of the Xenosuran family of arthrophysids. These small, seemingly harmless creatures function as planktonivores on the sandy beaches of Zeeon, where they feed on the small, benthic creatures buried in the damp sand itself. These they find using their antennae, located at the front of their heads. These antennae are highly tuned, capable of smelling even the most faint odors; however, they are not capable of picking up distant smells, and are only useful for detecting prey. In order to detect predators, the Crawlers possess a pair of compound eyes, located on small ridges on the top of their heads. They dig out their prey using their jointed paddles, which evidence supports the possibility that they are, at least at some stage of the Crawler's life cycle, used to propel them through water. Their tail ends in two points, its purpose either having become vestigial over time or not quite understood by the Aurix.

[edit] Aurix

Conservation Status: --
Binominal Name: Ovokentron ultravenator
The Aurum are destined to become the new sapient species of Vuunega; however, they have yet to reach this stage in their evolutionary history.

[edit] Spinster

Conservation Status: Not Threatened
Binominal Name: Unspecified
A species of dryptoscelidan, Spinsters are arboreal arachnoids with extensively elongated walking limbs, to allow them to easily climb between branches. They build vast nests, with large net-like extensions spanning the lengths between 3 or more nearby trees, and a very large "silk coccoon", in which the creature rests and/or waits for its prey.

[edit] Vrenna

Conservation Status: Not Threatened
Binominal Name: Unspeciied
An offshoot of the extinct Squillix species, Vrenna are bipod spinocephalopods, and possess long, streamlined shells. They retain the ancient hemophagic tendencies of the descendants of the Zocax, and have chosen to live a life as bottom-dwellers, burying themselves in the sand or mud and waiting for potential prey to wander too close, at which time they quickly snatch it and drain its blood. They are considered to be "living fossils", as they have changed little for millions of years. They are entirely deaf, lack any form of olfactory senses, and are completely solitary creatures. They also generate huge electrical currents to help stun their prey; this power far exceeds that of the Aurix, themselves.

[edit] Existing Species

[edit] Geological Time Scale

The geological time scale of Vuunega is a complex one, and is divided into two distinct sections; the Preaurosian and the Aurosian eons.

[edit] Preaurosian Eon

The Preaurosian Eon involves the original evolutionary timeline of the planet, in which the Zomm evolved to sapience and ultimately rose to power. Very little is currently known about this period.

[edit] Zommia Period

The Zommia Period entailed the entire existance of the Zomm and their closest ancestors, and involved their stint as the dominant sapient species of Vuunega. The Zommia Period ended with the Great Cataclysm -- when a great comet fell from the sky and subsequently erradicated 99.98% of life on the world; few complex creatures survived, giving rise once again to microorganisms.

[edit] Aurosian Eon

The Aurosian Eon entails everything that occured after the Great Cataclysm, and brought about a new age, where a new species were able to reach sapience -- the Aurix.

[edit] Vuseyva Era

The Vuseyva Era was the period succeeding the Zommia, beginning soon after the cataclysmic events caused by the falling comet. Vuseyva is the Zommian word for "Armageddon", and is a perfect name for the time. This period entailed the time it took for the original ancestors of the Aurix to evolve out of the microscopic era. The Vuseyva Period ended soon after the Diatak Crisis, and was followed by the Prosparen Era.

[edit] Sulphura Period

The Sulphura Period was the first period of the Vuseyva Era, and was split into three epochs: Lower Sulphura, Middle Sulphura, and Upper Sulphura. It was during the Sulphura Period that the world was blanketed by dust thrown up into the upper atmosphere from the comet impact combined with the ash released from volcanoes, which cooled down the surface temperature. The initial impact of the comet caused nearly all volcanoes to begin erupting non-stop for a long period of time, filling the atmosphere and saturating the ground and waters with sulfur. The Lower and Middle Sulphura Epochs ended in Mass Extinctions of species who could not survive the increase in sulfuric content, while the Upper Sulphura Epoch ended in the gradual calming of the volcanoes of the world, and a much less significant extinction event.

[edit] Dispersal Period

The Dispersal Period was the period following the Sulphura Period, during which the Zocax first began to eke out their living. It is split into another three epochs: Light Dispersal, Medium Dispersal, and Heavy Dispersal. It was during these times that the sulfur that had saturated the world began to disperse within the waters, allowing life to slowly pick up pace again. It is considered by many to be the exact opposite of the Sulphura Period, and each epoch ended in a blooming of life. The Dispersal Period was considered over when the sulfuric content of the oceans had returned to their normal levels.

[edit] Cnidomeria Period

The Cnidomeria Period was the period following the Dispersal Period and was the final period of the Vuseyva Era. It was separated into two epochs: Cnidos and Proboscia. The Cnidos period was named after the Cnidomecia who arose during this time, and is considered a prosperous time for microscopic life, especially in tropical habitats. However, it is smaller than the Proboscia Epoch, during which the Cnidomecia continued to evolve and split into the Hemomecia. The Cnidos ended with the change in the Dessile populations, Proboscia ended shortly after the Diatak Crisis, in which many prominent species went extinct, creating in affect a micro-mass extinction.

[edit] Prosparen Era

The Prosparen Era was the period succeeding the Vuseyva, beginning soon after the Diatak Crisis mass extinction. Prosparen is a Zommian one-word phrase meaning "Life succeeds over death", and like before, is a great name for the time. This period entailed the life flourishment in the seas during the Neustecene Explosion, and the journey of the Aurixan's first macroscopic ancestors up until the Squillix arrived on land. The Prosparen Period ended soon after the Aneucts Crisis.

[edit] Neustecene Period

The Neustecene Period was the first period of the Prosparen Era, and was split into four epochs: Chordacene, Anthocene, Bagabio, and the Laminaracene.
