Our blood may be cold, but our hearts burn with unseen ferocity. Like the Winter, you cannot be rid of us; you may burn our lands to the ground and salt the ruins, but like Winter, we will always come again. And like Winter, if you are unprepared for us, then it is likely that your death will be a chilling one.

- Tondroskys Talsar, ancient Borealis Zazane monarch

The Borealis Zazane, also known as Detharango (Zan'Tai: Icebound Ones) are a subspecies of the extrauniversal Zazane who emerged around the world of Kryptka, at the Demolidus Sector of the Borealis Galaxy. Descendants of scouts from another universe, they were cut off from their people and adapted to a life in the dangerous, crime-ridden Borealis, leading to a deviation of their culture towards space piracy and marauding.

Due to having a very long association with the Wranploer, the Borealis Zazane are responsible to much bloodshed through the ages, leading to a strong stigma towards their kind by the natives of Borealis. However, more recent developments have led to many of their kind to shift away from their criminal lives and seek a different future.

History[]

The Zazane arrived in Borealis about 70,000 years before the events of the Ice Age, originated as a colonization force from the Second Sovereign Domain who were scouting the Onuris Universe to plan for its settling. Shortly after their arrival, their means of interuniversal travel was lost, cutting these Zazane from the rest of their people and forcing them to survive on their own accord. Other races of the Second Sovereign Domain such as the Horder were also among them.

Settling on the tundra world of Kryptka, the Zazane adapted to the unique state both of their homeworld and the galaxy around them; a lawless no man's land where might made right. Over the following millenia, the original colonization force fractured into a number of disparate kingdoms, states and warbands who paid fealty to the royalty of the homeworld, having become a distinct subspecies of Zazane to the point their original counterparts no longer existed among their people. Due to their advanced technology, these Zazane territories thrived, but grew more and more decadent over time, stopping them from becoming a true galactic power of their own right.

Upon the rise of the Wranploer's Empire of Vijaha, they vassalized the Borealis Zazane into their ranks by using promises of power and wealth to tempt their war-starved people into action; those that refused would flee and become the Merchant Fleets, while the rest of their people had their culture deeply influenced by that of the Wranploer, leading to many of them becoming space pirates and marauders motivated by greed.

The Borealis Zazane remained under the sway of the Wranploer Legion and later the Borealis Consortium Network, though the latter's collapse during the Second Borealis Galactic War affected their people strongly; the Brood of War managed to convince many of them to turn against their Wranploer overlords, leading them to migrate to the Andromeda Galaxy and form a new nation called the Borealia Kingdom, which would endure for a few years before collapsing itself during the Golden Movement.

In the current day, the Borealis Zazane are a very fractured people; most hold no allegiance to a single nation, while others continue pledging themselves to space pirates and warlords. The small population who makes up the Merchant Fleets, meanwhile, thrives and continues to expand its influence.

Characteristics[]

Biology[]

Borealis Zazane are humanoid draconics similar to their common Drik counterparts, but are distinct for their blackish-blue scales. Their skeletal structure is enveloped in a layer of Shidium which extends to their nails, claws, horns and head crests, making them incredibly resistant against blunt trauma, and an adaptation to the weather of Kryptka has led them to develop a strong resistance to cold temperatures; consequently, Borealis Zazane tend to find temperatures considered merely warm by other races to be uncomfortable.

Behavior[]

Borealis Zazane possess a strong martial culture with emphasis on honor, though this was corrupted by millenia of living under the sway of the Wranploer; it led them to keep their honor reserved only to those strong enough to match them, with weaker races only being seen as targets to be plundered. They are notable among the Zazane cultures of the Onuris Universe for still holding on to certain cultural aspects of the Second Sovereign Domain; particularly, Borealis Zazane religion is centered around the worship of Vaxal Myraad, which has largely been discarded by other Zazane populations.

Abilities[]

Due to their nature as a subspecies of Zazane, the Borealis Zazane are among the most powerful warriors of the Borealis Galaxy, with their armies being feared as nigh-unstoppable by less developed cultures. Their strength is such that the Wranploer close to corrupt them into vassals rather than face them in a direct confrontation, and their soldiers remain among the most feared. Due to their natural adaptations, Borealis Zazane are also comfortable living in temperatures that would freeze the average alien.
