Death is that which occurs when you fail at the current portion of a phase. This differs per stage, but the common link is that the various dangers of the game have overwhelmed you and won. Death in Spore appears to bump you back down to the previous step of evolution, effectively offering you the chance to evolve/advance in a different direction to beat whatever destroyed you. It is unknown what will happen if you die at the first step of evolution - you may or may not be loaded back into the first step, or the it is simpely "game over" and you can start a new game.

[edit] Death by Phase

[edit] Tide Pool and Creature Phase Death

Death in the Tide Pool and Creature phases is likely brought on by your avatar in the game world running out of health. It will knock you back one step of evolution. You will be able to go back and change the previous edits in the Creature editor to perhaps a better combination that will help you survive. This will effectively allow you to evolve differently to beat the threats keeping you held back.

[edit] Tribal Phase Death

Since the hut is a central thing to the Tribal Phase, Death in the tribal phase likely means getting your hut damaged or destroyed. Since you can buy new and better huts for your creatures as a means of improving them, it is possible that death will result in your hut getting put back to a previous hut. The Tribe itself may also factor into this, since if too many of your creatures die you will effectively not have a tribe anymore. How the tribe and the hut interlink with each other is as of yet unclear, however, so assumptions are hazy in this area.

[edit] City and Civilization Phase Death

In the City Phase, you are building up your city - since interaction with other cities heralds the Civilization age, it is not immediately discernible what exactly will bring about death in the City phase besides the physical destruction of your city. Perhaps internal factors like rebellion or crime may be the hazards you face in this phase. Since the objective in the city phase is to build new buildings to develop your city, death will likely be taken as letting your buildings get destroyed. The more buildings you have, the more "lives" you have. Your citizens might also be a factor. if the city is transformed into a "Ghost-Town"(no population) your culture has reached death. It's quite possible that there is also no way to effectively "lose" in the city stage reminiscent of SimCity that Will Wright also created.

Since the Civilization Phase is so similar to the City phase, it is likely that the central objective of protecting your buildings will still be in play; only now there are greater threats in the form of hostile civilizations wanting to conquer you. Should you allow your city to be destroyed in the Civilization or City phase, it is not easy to assume what would happen. It is possible that this heralds the failure of your civilization, and so you will be forced to start again from that phase.

[edit] Space Phase Death

Allowing your UFO to be destroyed may signify the end in the Space phase. It is unknown whether you are allowed to build backup UFOs in this phase, or if you have to rebuild if and when you are destroyed, from your civilization. Not much information is available in this regard. The main danger of death in the Space phase will likely come from other worlds.
