The Borealis Consortium Network

Give me a reason not to rip your head from your shoulders and simply take your resources for myself.
The reason is simple; I can make us greater than a Consortium... Greater than a Legion... And greater than any who would oppose either of us.

- General Volim and Falrik Zaarkhun at the formation of their alliance

The Borealis Consortium Network was a massive empire and mega corporation which spanned various parts of Arm D in the Borealis Galaxy. Founded from an alliance between the Wranploer Legion and the extragalactic Zaarkhun Consortium, it led to both elevating themselves into a military and economical behemoth which aimed to spread through the rest of the galaxy and achieve dominance over those who would oppose them, primarily the Polar Crystal Alliance.

The Borealis Consortium Network was a paradoxical entity, born of Volim's goals of ruling over the galaxy as an emperor and Falrik Zaarkhun's aims to plunge the galaxy into complete anarchy. Yet, their combined resources and enmity towards common enemies led the Consortium to be among the greatest forces in Borealis' modern history, whose legacy left a permanent mark upon the galactic community.

Zaarkhun's arm of the Borealis Consortium Network presented itself as a megacorporation. Its ability to form trade routes and corner markets in ways rival corporations could not, and its prolific network of private military corporations, gave it immense success and influence. Most of the time, it did so by covertly creating problems to then sell the solution, profiting off of the misery it exported. All the while, territory held by Volim still functioned much as a totalitarian state.

While the Consortium Network eventually fell to the Polar Crystal Alliance, a number of successors would rise over the years to take its place, with the New Wranploer Legion, the Oltauris Consortium and the Children of Synthesis being the most famous.

History[]

Formation and rise[]

The Borealis Consortium Network was formed in 2784 as a result of the Clash of the Crimelords; following a brief conflict between the Wranploer Legion and the Zaarkhun Consortium, the two factions would end up agreeing to an alliance which would lead to their merging into a single superpower. This led to a number of Ottzelloan races; namely Heeyorians, Technobians, Boglot and Loktan to join the ranks of the Wranploer and their various servants, leading to a population boom and a period of preparation for the newly formed Consortium Network to act against their foes.

To the wider galaxy, the alliance between the Wranploer and Zaarkhun was not known; instead, the Borealis Consortium Network presented itself as a mega corporation who made business with all other nations and were not involved with the Wranploer Legion, all while using the funds obtained in their operations to feed the Wranploer war effort.

With Zaarkhun's new resources at his disposal, he began expanding his influence around the galaxy. Both through Volim's own informants, and putting several spies and corrupt officials on his payroll, Zaarkhun was able to put together trade routes and cornering markets in a way no other company was capable of. By making media appearances and favorable trade deals with those in Borealis' lawful regions, he did so while maintaining good public relations, for him and for the corporation.

Volim's territory meanwhile operated much the same as it previously had, with his rule remaining absolute. The Consortium Network through Zaarkhun did manage to expand to any remaining criminal territory previously unaffiliated with the Wranploer Legion after they had bought into Zaarkhun's vision, only to find in several cases that the "protection" being offered eventually led to the Wranploer subjugation that they had once resisted.

Second Borealis Galactic War[]

By the time the Second Borealis Galactic War was sparked, the Consortium Network had spread its influence for most of the galactic criminal underground, firmly establishing itself as its ruler. Between the conflicts of the Borealis War and the piracy and unrest already existing in the region, several war-torn planets' primary resource soon became battle-hardened soldiers. This caused Zaarkhun through entrepeneurs to establish a network of private military corporations, leading more and more veterans to become mercenaries, many of whom would be under the Consortium Network's thumb, directly or indirectly.

The Consortium Network would make its move by instigating the rise of the War Economy, leading to the fall of numerous lesser governments across the galaxy and to the birth of numerous criminal syndicates and an even further proliferation of private military corporations. Using them, they would lead an operation called 'March of Liberty' into the Zoles Imperium, though their efforts would be thwarted by the forces of Order and then the arrival of the Vyro'Ralza, whose time anomalies forced them to join forces with the reborn Polar Crystal Alliance to fight off the Devourer's Chosen, the Alvino Brood and the Borealis Grox Empire.

Following the defeat of the Grox, the Borealis Consortium Network would attempt once again to emerge victorious by attacking the exhausted Polar Crystal Alliance. Though his secret had been revealed and his operation no longer covert, Zaarkhun was able to organize the assassination of several high-ranking politicians and military leaders across the galaxy, causing widespread panic and crushing any military response. However, thanks to Warmaster Arkarixus' pragmatic scheming, he was able to pit Volim and Falrik Zaarkhun against each other, culminating into the latter's death; this led to the Consortium Network plunging into civil war as Volim attempted to dominate all of Zaarkhun's resources, allowing the Polar Crystal Alliance to siege the Wranploer homeworld of Vijaha and kill the General once and for all.

The Borealis Consortium Network would subsequently collapse into hundreds of small warbands and corporations, all who vied for control over the network and its armies. As of the Ice Age, a number of these remnants would rise into prominence, such as Torrent's New Wranploer Legion, Billig's Oltauris Consortium and Vorius' Children of Synthesis. Meanwhile, the Consortium Network's effect on the galactic underground remained prominent even after its fall, leading to crime and the war economy continuing to exist around hubs like the criminal capital of Hyposirius.

Government[]

The Borealis Consortium Network was a cross between a stratocratic dictatorship and a mega corporation, with each half being coordinated by one of its two ultimate rules, Volim and Falrik Zaarkhun. Despite the contributions of the Zaarkhun Consortium, the Wranploer race remained dominant within the BCN's command structure; positions of power within the empire were given to either Wranploer or exceptionally trustworthy individuals of the Warrior Caste - the Servant and Slave caste had no say in politics. Meanwhile, Heeyorians dominated the corporate side, thanks to their association with Falrik Zaarkhun and experience under the Zaarkhun Consortium.

The Wranploer homeworld of Vijaha served as the formal capital of the Borealis Consortium Network, though the leaders of the empire spent most of their time coordinating it from the flagship called The Iron Fist.

Society[]

Official Wranploer Legion territory[]

Like the Wranploer Legion before it, citizens of the Borealis Consortium Network in territory that was still designated Wranploer Legion territory were divided into four castes: Master, Warrior, Servant and Slave.

The Master caste was that of the Wranploer, its sole members and rulers of the Network. The Wranploer were allowed - and expected - to lead over all others, and would respond to rebellion of any nature with extreme violence - it was not rare for even races of the Warrior Caste to suffer genocide by Wranploer hands.

The Warrior Caste was made out of the most powerful races in the Legion after the Wranploer themselves, who served as the bulk of its military and corporate leadership, granted greater freedom in the process. However, they were not allowed to gain titles that would put them above Wranploer citizens.

The Servant caste was the Network's equivalent of a working class and possessed average rights, while the Slave caste was treated as expected of its name - they had no rights of any sort and existed to serve the needs of the Castes above them.

Lawless criminal territory[]

The Borealis Consortium Network did not officially occupy planets or territory, even after its secret was revealed. Instead, outside what was known as Wranploer Legion territory, planets that were affiliated with the Consortium Network fell heavily under its influence while officially being stateless societies in total anarchy. Said planets were policed and protected by private military corporations which were often times direct or indirect subsidiaries of the Borealis Consortium Network, effectively making them Consortium Network territory in a way Zaarkhun would never admit.

In such planets, laws as such did not typically exist, and in their place were rules put in place by landlord contracts. As such, quality of life varied wildly. While some planets and regions were much more civilized and peaceful, others were brutish and dystopian, as behavior considered criminal in other parts of the galaxy was performed frequently there with no jurisdiction. Some citizens owned their property outright and paid a fee to a PMC to protect it, while others paid rent to a landowner which included payments for the protection and enforcement of rules that took place of laws.

Outside of this, criminal Consortium Network activity in non-stateless territory was underground and secretive. Most criminal activity there occurred in bars and casinos, where gambling occurred as well as frequent battles between gangs.

Technology[]

The Borealis Consortium Network employed much of the same technology as that of the Wranploer Legion: stagnant technologicaly growth due to a lack of scientists and researchers among the warriors and pirates who made up the nation. However, a greater emphasis on dealing with the black market led to much of their systems and their fleet to be upgraded to be on part with that of their foes, making them even more dangerous on the battlefield than before.

The Legion Network used swarming tactics in order to keep up with their enemies, both in land and in space, drowning their enemies in blaster weaponry and energy blades until they could no longer fight back. Their ships all used the Cold Relay travel network in Borealis, and zero-point energy, as well as other stolen power sources in their vehicles.

The Legion Network also employed several PMCs to their fold, often with stronger weaponry and more elite troops than the larger Wranploer Legion mustered. These however came in much lower numbers and with much higher cost, leading Volim to dislike their use while Zaarkhun revelled in it.

Business[]

The Borealis Consortium Network megacorporation had a hand in a vast array of industries: information technology, financial technology, weaponry, medicine, and rare minerals. Underground, it also unofficially was involved in illegal drug trafficking, and most illegal trades outside of the slave trade (which Zaarkhun was personally vehemently opposed to). As such, even its extremely high calculated net worth at its height was in fact an underestimation of the wealth it accumulated.

The Consortium Network in particular had a habit of cornering markets through unfair advantages. In particular, being intimately familiar with pirate activity (and in some cases paying off or simply eliminating those who did not cooperate) allowed Consortium Network traders to operate trade routes for rare minerals that previously could not be easily bought and sold.

In other cases, the Consortium Network would often create problems to sell solutions. In certain markets, rather than corner it for themselves, they would sell military services to other traders, often to provide protection from pirates that the Consortium Network had themselves deployed. This helped them avoid suspicion in addition to extracting more and more profits.

Another notable aspect of the Consortium Network's business deals was how it weaponized the markets it controlled. In some cases, the corporation used its control of medical supplies and weapons supply routes to extort planets or intimidate them into conforming to its will; those that did not pay up were instead subjugated by the Wranploer.

Religion[]

Like both of its predescessors, the Borealis Consortium Network was a vehemently antitheistic empire. The Wranploer were noted for their distaste for religion, considering the idea of a being greater than themselves to be insulting, and the Zaarkhun Consortium had its own history of working against organized religion due to Falrik Zaarkhun's own hatred towards gods of all kinds. Because of this, religion was forbidden and persecuted across worlds controlled by the Network even more fiercely than during the days of the Wranploer Legion.
