The High Kingdom of Alhassal-ten-Fajim, also known as Alhassal or the Holy Kingdom of Pheonas, is a human nation located on the north of the Great Desert, and one of the largest provinces of the greater Empire of Man. As one of its founders, Alhassal holds great sway both in Imperial politics, both internal and external - comparable only with its fellow Rebellion Nation, the militarised Grand Principality of Mannazia, with whom Alhassal shares an ancient and lasting enmity. Often considered to be the Empire's spiritual heart, the hardy desert nation has been the birthplace of Imperial science, culture and art, and the most prominent religion of the Empire, the cult of Pheonas the Five Faces, also has its roots there. This gives Alhassans all the more reason to consider themselves the superior culture among other human provinces; the humans of the Sea of Sand pride themselves on their piety, education and sophistication, and the notion of Alhassal's exceptionalism has been popular among them for centuries.
As a desert nation, Alhassal is vast: it stretches all over the north of the Sea of Sand, roughly correspondent the area known as the Espid Wastes, and at south borders the Merovar Dynasty and Khaepsha-ultan, with whom its relationships have often been sour. However, most of this territory is uninhabitable by humans, and the only major centers of civilisation in Alhassal are its mighty Citadels: grand fortress complices of stone and metal where water can be found and life can exist. Each of these fortresses is ruled by an independent Shah, all of whom ultimately answer to the supreme Padishah Divine of Sarif Maidan, who alone wields the power to control the flow of water throughout Alhassal. Outside these citadels live only the primitive tribes of Glasswalkers, hardened and weary people used to survive in inhumane conditions: they eke out their living by herding, trading and serving as mercenaries and, while despised somewhat, are valued greatly by the Shahs. Together, they and the people of the Citadels form the proud nation of Alhassal - and woe to anyone who would dare to question its supremacy.
