Our legacy, the legacy of mighty Moreuse, is forged in the crucible of war, tempered by the strength of our people and bound to the stars themselves. Let it be known that our reign is unyielding! Our reach limitless! Our resolve unbreakable.

- Queen Moch-Na

The Mortalitas Empire (7,710 BNE - 01 BNE), otherwise known simply as Mortiol, was a prominent and formidable civilization ruled by the aquatic Mortalitas of Moreuse. Native to the Mortiol Starcluster in the Unknown Regions of the Cyrannus Galaxy, Mortiol's history was defined by the Mortalitas' fervent pursuit of power and dominion.

Stepping into the void left by the fall of the Nagith Empire millennia previously, the Mortalitas Empire extended its influence by conquering numerous sectors of the northern reaches of the Mortiol Starcluster, establishing itself within the span of a few decades as the region's dominant power. This expansionist journey inevitably led to conflict, most prominently the War of the Blue Scales, a conflict that pitted the Mortalitas against the equally ambitious Tiranozark. Despite the initial hostilities, the emergence of the Cognatus as a common enemy united the warring factions, leading to the establishment of a powerful alliance that lasted millennia, ultimately leading to the Tiranozark joining the Mortalitas as equals.

In recent galactic history, Queen Moch-Na ascended to the throne with aspirations of embodying both strength and compassion. However, her reign became manipulated by her feared and ambitious husband Zillum, who rose to power as the most powerful warrior in the galaxy. Under Zillum's unofficial rule, the Mortalitas Empire embraced galactic expansionism once more, sparking the Mortalitas War against the Capricorn Sector Alliance in the 50s BNE, and Mortiol's involvement as an associate member of the Imperial Alliance. Like the Basileus Imperium, the Mortalitas supported the establishment of the Confederacy of Allied Systems prior to the Great Cyrannus War, providing much of the Confederacy's military might during the conflict.

When the conflict came to an end with the formation of the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus, Moch-Na, recognizing the might and potential influence of the Empire, saw an opportunity to elevate the Mortalitas to new heights on the galactic stage and bent the knee to Emperor Tyrómairon, marking the end of the Mortalitas Empire.

History[]

Origins[]

Native to the aquatic planet Moreuse, the Mortalitas united their homeworld early in their civilization's history, unified under the power and majesty of the ancient matriarchal monarchs of Minasmort. Symbolizing the power of the monarch was the ancient star-dragon Drakozaldrises, which made its home on the planet in the dim past of Oikoumene rule. Fond of the natives of the planet, Drakozaldrises formed an unspoken bond with successive Mortalitasi monarchs, cementing their control over the emerging Mortalitas Empire.

As the Mortalitas expanded into the depths of space from 7,710 BNE, Moreuse became the epicentre of their vast empire. The planet, with its huge tropical seas and warm swamps, served as a source of wealth and prosperity for the Mortalitas, with riches acquired from their galactic exploits pouring into their beloved motherworld, making it one of the most successful and influential worlds in the Unknown Regions. Despite this prosperity, the early centuries of the Mortalitas Empire were characterized by territorial conquests and a relentless pursuit of dominance. The Mortiol Starcluster witnessed the rise of their dominion as the Mortalitas annexed numerous star systems, showcasing their fearsome disposition and military prowess. The War of the Blue Scales, a pivotal conflict against the expansionist Tiranozark, solidified the Mortalitas' standing as a force to be reckoned with in the Unknown Regions, ultimately ending when the Mortalitas found common cause with the Tiranozark against the Cognatus Alliance.

Rise to Power[]

Centuries later, following the death of her mother, Queen Moch-Na rose to the throne of Minasmort, bolstered by her alliance with Drakozaldrises. Although ruthless when necessary, Queen Moch-Na ascended to the throne with aspirations of embodying both strength and compassion, inspired by the values instilled in her by her mother. Her reign began with a commitment to please her people and uphold the principles of justice. However, the course of her life took a dramatic turn when she encountered Zillum, a young and ambitious officer with designs that reached far beyond their personal relationship. Initially, Moch-Na's love for Zillum led to their marriage, a union that, unbeknownst to her, would reshape the power dynamics within the Mortalitas Empire.

Khuenaten vs Zillum

Zillum rose to power as the great warlord of the Mortalitas.

Zillum, driven by a relentless desire for power, strategically maneuvered through the military command structure, ultimately becoming the de facto leader of the Mortalitas. Moch-Na found herself relegated to the role of a symbolic figurehead, a puppet leader under the influence of her ambitious husband. Despite Zillum's ascendance, Moch-Na's popularity endured among the Mortalitas. Her regal and stately presence, combined with a charismatic demeanour, maintained her status as a beloved figure. Under Zillum's guidance, the Mortalitas Empire witnessed significant shifts in foreign policy. The empire tilted toward authoritarianism, launching ambitious expansionist campaigns against the civilizations of the galactic interior. Simultaneously, an alliance was formed between the Mortalitas and the Basileus Imperium, which sought to impose a new order on Cyrannus.

First Great War[]

In the decades following the brief Mortiol Expansion War of the 50s BNE, the Mortalitas and the Basileus began orchestrating events and fleet movements, as envisioned by the vision of the Basileus Imperator Tyranus, who sought to create a galactic order ruled politically by the Basileus and militarily by the Mortalitas. Simultaneously, deeper in the Unknown Regions, the Cognatus' decades-long buildup of their military was finalized, inaugurated by the outbreak of the Intergalactic War against the United Republic of Cyrannus. Simultaneously, the Cognatus pushed into the Mortiol Starcluster in an attempt to destroy their ancient foes. While the Tiranozark and Mortalitas worked together to push them back, the Tyranikus Stratocracy was left crippled and leaderless as a result. Out of respect for their ancient friendship and their aid against the Cognatus, Zillum offered the Tiranozark shelter under the Mortalitas Empire, leading the two races to finally merge into a single faction.

Confrontation on Moreuse

Freed from captivity during the Second Great War, Moch-Na and Drakozaldrises sought to restore the Mortalitas Empire.

After the end of the war with the Cognatus, the Mortalitas Empire and the Basileus Imperium mutually supported the newly established League of Self-Determination of Wulff Dastirius, and subsequently, the Confederacy of Allied Systems as a rival superpower to the Republic. The military might of the Mortalitas and the Tiranozark provided the backbone of the Confederacy's military forces during the subsequent Great Cyrannus War, during which the Mortalitas rose to new heights of galactic power under Zillum's unofficial rule. The Mortalitas' commitment to the Confederacy served as a strategic move, masking their true intentions of manipulating events to ensure an outcome of the war favourable to Mortalitasi dominance.

Indeed, in spite of thousands of years of sovereignty, Zillum and Moch-Na quickly bent the knee to the Dark Lord Tyrómairon when he ended the conflict with the establishment of the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus in 01 BNE. Like the Basileus Imperium, the Mortalitas Empire was dissolved under Tyrómairon's rule, marking the end of an era and ushering in a new chapter for the Mortalitas.

Legacy[]

Under the overarching authority of the Galactic Empire of Cyrannus, the Mortalitas, along with their Tiranozark allies, initially found themselves integrated into the Imperial structure. While Mortalitas military prowess was recognized and utilized by the Empire, tensions simmered beneath the surface. A significant faction within the Mortalitas, led by Zillum, harbored ambitions that extended beyond serving as mere subjects within the Imperial hierarchy. As Zillum's ambitions solidified, he rebelled against the Empire and joined the Cyrannian Imperial State, a breakaway faction that sought to challenge Tyrómairon's authority.

During the New Cyrandia Wars, Zillum's faction played a pivotal role in the State's military and political endeavors, though he swiftly abandoned it when the Imperial State lost more and more ground to the Empire. Fleeing to the Quadrant Galaxies with his ally Tyrant, Zillum forged the Great Star Dominion over the course of many years, declaring himself its Grand Imperarch. Striking Moreuse during the Second Great Cyrannus War, he imprisoned Moch-Na and declared himself the first King of the Mortalitas. After the fall of the Empire at the Great Battle of Orbispira in 20 NE, Moch-Na was freed by her loyalists and embarked on a campaign to reclaim her throne and restore the Mortalitas Empire to its former glory.

Government and Politics[]

MochNaProfile

Moch-Na, the last Queen of the Mortalitas Empire.

At the heart of the Mortalitas Empire lay the monarchy, an unbroken lineage of female rulers who ascended to the Throne of Minasmort as queens. This hereditary system placed great emphasis on the wisdom and strength of the ruling monarch, who assumed the mantle of leadership and responsibility over the entire empire upon ascending to the throne. The Queen, seen as the embodiment of the Mortalitas people, is revered as both a political and spiritual figure. An integral aspect of the Mortalitasi monarchy is the ancient bond with Drakozaldrises, an enigmatic star-dragon that has served as the protector of the monarchs and Moreuse itself throughout generations. Passed from Queen to Queen, this semi-mystical connection, in the eyes of many Mortalitas, symbolized the symbiotic relationship between mortal rulers and the cosmic forces that watch over the destiny of the Mortalitas Empire. Drakozaldrises was seen not merely as a guardian but as a revered entity that embodied the enduring strength and resilience of the Mortalitas.

Society and Culture[]

The Mortalitas Empire embraced an authoritarian philosophy grounded in the belief that a strong, central authority is indispensable for the success of any civilization. This philosophy arose from the conviction that an alternative path, exemplified by the Libertus, would lead to anarchy and chaos, threatening the very fabric of Mortalitas society. The duty of the state, as perceived by the Mortalitas, was to guide its citizens along paths that are deemed the most productive, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious existence.

The Mortalitas' commitment to militarism extended beyond mere defence; it encompassed a proactive stance, seeking to spread their way of life to others, whether through willing assimilation or conquest. This uncompromising approach reflected the Mortalitas' conviction that the only way to ensure the survival and prosperity of their civilization is to make it the shared destiny of all who inhabit their dominion. In the Mortalitas Empire, the fusion of monarchy, ancient mysticism, authoritarian governance, and fanatical militarism defined their civilization for millennia.

Astrography[]

Minasmort

Minasmort, capital of the Mortalitas Empire.

Throughout the history of the Mortalitas Empire, it was anchored by the aquatic Mortalitas homeworld of Moreuse. Early in the evolutionary history of the Mortalitas, their ancestors evolved from lizards on land, before returning to the seas and becoming fully aquatic, much like the prehistoric mosasaurs of Earth. Deeply attuned to their homeworld, the Mortalitas established massive cities across the planet, most notably the great seat of Mortalitasi power, the capital of Minasmort. Governed by the ruling Queen, Minasmort was not just a political capital but a symbol of Mortalitas authority and grandeur. From this regal perch, the successive line of monarchs steered the destiny of the Mortalitas Empire.

Military and Defense[]

Central to Mortalitas ideology is a fanatical militarism that considers the projection of force as paramount for preserving their way of life. This philosophy pervades Mortalitas society, where the ability to defend and expand their dominion is seen as an essential aspect of their existence. This militaristic fervour is deeply ingrained in the cultural identity of the Mortalitas, shaping their worldview and informing their approach to both internal and external affairs.

As such, the Mortalitas Empire stood as a martial powerhouse from the vast reaches of the Mortiol Starcluster to the shores of Moreuse, with the Mortalitas military and defence apparatus woven into the very fabric of imperial existence. At the heart of Mortalitas military power lay the formidable Mortalitas Fleet, a naval force that controlled the star-lanes and space lanes of the Mortiol Starcluster. Comprising heavily armed warships, advanced cruisers, and strategic battlecruisers, the Mortalitas Fleet projected the empire's power across sectors and maintained a vigilant watch over its borders. With a distinctive focus on naval superiority, the Mortalitas Fleet was often considered one of the galaxy's finest fighting forces, later serving as the backbone of the military of the Confederacy of Allied Systems, the Cyrannian Imperial State, and the Great Star Dominion.

Starships[]

Mortalitas Dreadnought
  • Name - Mortalitas Dreadnought
  • Length - Varies, generally 2,500 meters
  • Role - Warship, commandship, carrier

The massive Mortalitas Dreadnought is the most iconic warship in the arsenal of the Mortalitas Empire, and would later inspire the Providence-class dreadnought fielded by the Confederacy of Allied Systems. A roughly cylindrical warship, the Dreadnought's surface is dotted with heavy weapons emplacements capable of piercing through the shields and hulls of enemy vessels. Dreadnoughts are massive, cylindrical 2500-meter-long warships with a pointed nose that tapers towards the superstructure. Rising from the stern portion of the vessel, is an elongated main communications and sensor pod. A famous ship of this line was the Benevolent, under the command of General Zillum in the Great Cyrannus War.

MortySuperShip
  • Name - Mortalitas Supercarrier
  • Length - 5,000 meters
  • Role - Warship, command ship

An old Mortalitas design dating back to the early days of the Mortalitas Empire, the Mortalitas Supercarrier has seen extensive service during the many wars the Mortalitas find themselves in. The vessels made their first notable appearence in the Mortalitas War with the Capricorn Sector Alliance, and were deployed in their hundreds during various campaigns under the command of Zillum. When the Mortalitas joined with the Imperial Alliance after the Trucinex War, the Supercarrier ended active production, but can still be found protecting Mortalitas space, or in the hands of pirates.

Grígori-class
  • Name - Grígori-class
  • Length - 800 meters
  • Role - Ship to Ship Combat, Orbital Bombardment

The Grígori-class Cruiser is an old ship used by the Mortalitas Empire. It bears resemblance to the much larger Mortalitas Dreadnought, and became a common blockade runner in the Confederate armada, using its massive engines to break through enemy fleets and land on the surface of a planet. The Grígori-class is very effective and its strong hull, weapons and engines made it a perfect command frigate of the Confederacy.

Emporico-class
  • Name - Emporico-class
  • Length - 5000 meters
  • Role - Ship to Ship Combat, Orbital Bombardment, Blockades

The Emporicó-class Dreadnought is the largest Mortalitas ship in active service. This huge behemoth was twice the size of the Mortalitas Dreadnought and had few equals in battle. The Emporicó-class contained thousands of troops, tanks and other war machines built for the sole purpose of subjugating enemy worlds and protecting important allied worlds. Used to great extent during the First Great War, the Emporico-class now protects important Mortalitas planets, while many have fallen into the hands of rebels and pirates.

Vehicles[]

Mortalitas Tank

The Mortalitas Armoured Tank is a highly advanced pilotless war machine that spreads terror across battlefields. A medium sized tank, the MAT-01 has seen extensive service in the armies of the Imperial Alliance and the Confederacy of Allied Systems and is used to protect Mortalitas planets, and indeed other planets from across Cyrannus, making them quite famous. Its primary weapon is capable of functioning as both anti-vehicle and anti-aircraft, and can also fire drones. Like the Mortalitas Assault Tank, the MAT-01 is designed after a species of crab that inhabits the beaches of Moreuse.

Mortalitas Assualt Tank
  • Name - Mortalitas Assault Tank (MAT-02)
  • Length - 9 meters
  • Role - Assault Tank, anti-infantry

The Mortalitas Assault Tank is a very common tank in the Mortalitas military, and like its cousin the MAT-01, is pilotless, programmed to serve the Mortalitas. When they were designed, they were mass produced by the Confederacy of Allied Systems and were used to a great extent in the Great Cyrannus War, with most Confederate vessels fielding a squadron of MAT-02s. A formidable vehicle, the MAT-02 is armed with two main weapons, a large anti-vehicle cannon and two small anti-personal cannons on either side of the cockpit.
