It's one thing to have an unstoppable sword and an unbreakable shield. It's another thing to know which way they should be facing.

- Admiral Ariana Draccard

In order to ensure the nation's security and accurately identify the largest threats to Federation interests, the TIAF actively maintains a military intelligence database, which includes information about the military technology, standing military composition, and industrial potential of known nations in the First Gigaquadrant.

Military intelligence in the TIAF is primarily handled by two government organizations: the Federal Intelligence Commission and the Strategic Action Council. The Federal Intelligence Commission, being the Federation's general state intelligence agency, is responsible for the collection and analysis of information and data relevant to military interests. The Strategic Action Council, comprised of leaders from Federation defense organizations, is responsible for interpreting military intelligence in order to assess the threat posed by other nations and to develop effective strategies in the event of war.

History[]

Structure[]

Federal Intelligence Commission[]

The Federal Intelligence Commission is the general state intelligence agency of the Federation, conducting the typical intelligence activities of data-gathering, espionage, and analysis. The FIC is not a strictly military intelligence organization, but it works so heavily in tandem with military parties that many chalk it up as "a military intel organization that also does civilian intel on the side."

The FIC is spread all across the Federation, having bases of operation in most TIAF provinces to gather information on regional parties of interest. It is widely assumed that the FIC also has operatives working in foreign countries, though obviously the Commission does not usually speak openly about the activities of its espionage divisions. As the Federation has many connections to other countries in the First Gigaquadrant, the FIC does sometimes cooperate with and share intelligence with the intelligence communities of friendly nations, though the FIC usually prefers to work unilaterally if it can.

The Commission is divided into the Operations Department and the Investigation Department, with the Operations Department including intelligence gathering and covert operations, and the Investigation Department being in charge of analysis. Agents of both the Operations and Investigation Departments are grouped into Liaisons, which specialize in certain intelligence topics. For example, the Technology Liaison gathers intelligence on science and technology throughout the Federation and the Gigaquadrant, and the Social Liaison analyzes social and domestic political trends in the Federation and other countries. Within the Liaisons, there are also often Specialists whose job is to be subject matter experts on more specific categories within their Liaison - for example, a Draconid Social Specialist would be an expert on matters relating to social issues in the Draconid Imperium.

Each Liaison and Department has a Liaison or Department Chair, who is in charge of determining the focus and direction of their subordinates. At the top of the entire Commission is the Central Commissioner, who directs the entire Commission and appoints the Liaison and Department Chairs. The Commissioner themselves is appointed by the Prime Minister, and while not officially a member of the Central Ministry Commode, the FIC Commissioner is often considered on par with the top Commode Ministers in terms of importance.

Strategic Action Council[]

Threat Assessments[]

Among the Strategic Action Council's responsibilities is compiling detailed assessments of the military threat posed by foreign nations and analysis of potential strategies in war. The SAC produces assessments for all known nations regardless of relationship status, though the SAC does consider the state of relations when determining the gravity of a threat.

While the public is aware of the SAC's purpose for assessing military threats and developing war strategies, the threat assessments themselves are considered highly confidential, and are declassified only once they are out of date and if there is significant public demand for them. For all intents and purposes, the reports presented on this page are still confidential and their contents are not known to anyone outside of the SAC.

Levisala Flag

The flag of the Levisala Confederacy.

  • Name: Levisala Confederacy
  • State of relations: Uneasy. War not imminent, but almost certain at some point in the future based on current trends.
  • Known military forces: Sky Sword Navy (naval/terrestrial), Royal Marine Corps (terrestrial)

The Confederacy is a persistent enemy of ours, having fought us three times before and having lost every single one of those wars. The consequences of those three wars have been a serious setback in the Confederacy's military size and industrial potential. However, even though we have a winning record against them and have considerably more military resources on hand, they are not a threat that can be written off.

Even with their lesser numbers, the Levisala have consistently shown an incredible level of quality in their military forces. Their military commanders, such as Admiral KAVENDE JAYSMOTH and Admiral NIKOLAI DRESDEN, are among the most competent commanders in the galaxy, and their well-known ability to quickly innovate significantly reduces the actual advantage our superior technology gives us - it would be especially disastrous if they were able to fell and salvage a ship-of-the-line and reverse-engineer much of our modern weaponry and ship systems. There also lies a double-edged sword between us in the form of the CAIGIANCIA RUN. We have sovereignty over both sides of the Run, and our CAIGIANCIA PROVINCE in the MORMEA SECTOR allows us to directly strike at key Levisala worlds such as AREMEVAR and ARRELATE. However, the Levisala are just as capable of capturing CAIGIANCIA PROVINCE and using the Run to invade western ERION PROVINCE. As the First Bunsen War demonstrated, allowing the Levisala to establish a foothold in Erion would make a war against them considerably more difficult.

The Strategic Action Council predicts that, in the event of a one-on-one war, the Levisala will immediately attempt to establish control over CAIGIANCIA RUN, either by invading CAIGIANCIA PROVINCE and using the Run to attack ERION PROVINCE, or attempting to send forces across the Larson-Roswell Gap to directly attack Erion. Seeing that the Levisala would easily be able to seize the Run and isolate CAIGIANCIA PROVINCE, the SAC would recommend focusing defensive efforts in ERION PROVINCE. Ideally, the combined efforts of the Assault Armada and Domestic Defense would be able to whittle away SSN and RMC forces through attrition, eventually weakening the Levisala line enough to make a counterattack through the Run. Once control over the Run is re-established, the Assault Armada would then go about crippling key Levisala industrial worlds, such as BELLAXIO, ARRELATE, and SHINAVAR in focused strikes; and capturing strategic worlds, such as NANORNS and SAYAMAVAR, key transportation hubs to Levisala industrial centers outside of the MORMEA TERRITORY; and MORMUS, the political capital of the Confederacy.

Realistically, however, Levisala forces will not simply keep throwing forces at Erion until they are depleted; they will likely attempt a less conventional method of establishing a foothold somewhere along the edge of our territory. The First Bunsen War demonstrated that a Levisala presence anywhere along the Heartlands could give them the ability to coordinate an attack on our key industrial and strategic worlds in TYRUS-KYLESSA PROVINCE. So, while defenses should be focused in Erion, which would likely be the main Levisala strategic focus, adequate defenses must be left in western border regions to prevent a sneak attack against any of our own important worlds.

However, while they are a credible threat to the Heartlands, they lack the capabilities of seriously damaging any territory beyond that, including the Coleph provinces of DELTA and ORION. Thus, while they could potentially cause serious damage to the Heartlands, they lack scope and are unlikely to win a protracted war with us. Still, any serious damage to the Heartlands is serious damage to the Federation as a whole, and the Levisala must be classifed as a CONSIDERABLE military threat.

BGR Flag

The flag of the Bunsen Grox Republic.

  • Name: Bunsen Grox Republic
  • State of relations: Very stable alliance. War is a total improbability given the close economic and social ties currently held between the Republic and Federation.
  • Known military forces - Myrmidon Navy (naval/terrestrial), Sarissa Marine Corps (terrestrial)

The Republic is a close friend of ours, and an even closer neighbor - the Federation-Republic border is by far our largest shared border with a major galactic power. As such, we must be prepared to deal with any potential Republic military operation against us, as unlikely as that is considering our close friendship. It was not more than fifty years ago that the Republic was the fearsome, militaristic Bunsen Grox Empire, and their martial prowess has not been dulled by the more peaceful Republic regime.

One of the most striking advantages of the Republic is their compact, extremely well-developed territory. Bunsen Grox worlds have had millions of years to grow and develop, and were it not for numerous past conflicts for the Bunsen Grox - both internal and external - even their middle-tier worlds would rival or surpass modern Tropicana. With an industrial potential that potentially rivals both the Heartlands and Coleph Provinces combined, a war of attrition would become difficult. The high quality of Republic in-place defenses, especially in the COSINA RING, would make an invasion attempt difficult without risky maneuvers.

In the event of a war, the Strategic Action Council predicts two potential invasion routes by the Bunsen Grox. The first is a direct attack on CORE RIM PROVINCE, likely to target key regional industrial worlds such as KAVELANTAT and DURANGOS, important population centers such as AGUACATE and TERRAKATE, and critical transportation routes such as the ANTHALTI-CORE PORTAL. With few astrographical barriers to slow the MYRMIDON NAVY's advance, a defense of the CORE RIM would be difficult without massive casualties, especially if we were taken by surprise and unable to mobilize forces quickly enough to keep the SARISSA CORPS from establishing beachheads on the core worlds of CORE RIM. Given CORE RIM PROVINCE's incredibly important contributions to a Federation wartime economy, repelling BGR forces from the CORE RIM would take top priority. Should that fail, however, the SAC would recommend focusing defenses in the bottlenecks of LOWER ERION, and disabling the ANTHALTI-CORE PORTAL to prevent the MYRMIDON NAVY from opening another front in the north.

The other predicted war plan for the Bunsen Grox would be an invasion of DELTA PROVINCE. This strategy was used by the Bunsen Grox before in the later years of the First Bunsen War, and it became a devastating setback due to a lack of preparedness for such a scenario. A Bunsen Grox invasion of DELTA would likely entail a massive push by the MYRMIDON NAVY to seize PEMBERLEY, the Delta gateway world for COLEPH RUN. Once control over the Run is established, the Republic would proceed to flood TYRUS-KYLESSA PROVINCE with the bulk of their forces, creating a difficult defensive scenario as the Tyrus-Kylessa gateway of COLEPH RUN is situated in the heart of TYRUSAN and has no surrounding astrographical barriers to reliably bottleneck invading forces. In this scenario, defense of PEMBERLEY and the COLEPH RUN is of utmost priority. Adequate defenses should be positioned in CORE RIM to dissuade BGR forces from executing the aforementioned CORE RIM invasion plan in conjunction with the DELTA invasion plan; however, the vast majority of our defensive efforts must be focused on preventing the MYRMIDON NAVY from reaching COLEPH RUN. In addition to conventional defensive lines, a good counter-tactic would be to deploy skirmisher forces and mobile invasion fleets of the ASSAULT ARMADA to divide BGR lines as much as possible, preventing them from focusing forces on capturing PEMBERLEY.

Both scenarios leave little room for a counter-invasion, as our military resources may be exhausted from restoring battle lines to ante bellum positions. However, in the still-probable scenario that we can push into BGR territory or have the opportunity to strike before they can execute either of their invasion strategies, the SAC would recommend the following plan of invasion. Of utmost priority would be seizing key industrial worlds and military bases in LARSON-TANGENTA and OMEGA-TANGENTA, such as GERDEN, PEMBREE, and HEOGON. This will ensure that the Republic cannot easily mobilize forces in those regions to execute an invasion of CORE RIM or DELTA. From there, one potentially effective solution would be to blaze a path towards the SINA RING, the heart of the Republic, to quickly force a Republic surrender. However, such a strategy would mean contending with the resilient defenses of both COSINA and SINA, and would especially risk being flanked and encircled by BGR forces from neighboring regions of the Republic. Thus, it would be unwise to attempt a full invasion of the Republic's middle and inner rims. It would likely be adequate to seize key worlds throughout the TANGENTA RING and insulate our own industrial territories from counterattacks. From there, it will be much easier to outlast BGR forces in a war of attrition.

Given their close proximity to many of our key worlds and the high quality of their military forces, it would be foolish to undersell the military threat that the Republic poses to us, even if we are close allies and are unlikely to come to blows. They could have a very good chance of capturing and holding both CORE RIM and DELTA PROVINCES, two of the most developed regions of the Federation, and could contest control of most of the Heartlands after that. They do, however, lack the potential to project their military power on an intergalactic scale without our logistical support, and do not pose a threat to any of our territories outside of Bunsen. Therefore, with the acknowledgement that the state of diplomatic relations precludes the realization of such a threat, the Bunsen Grox must be classified as a CONSIDERABLE military threat.

GSC Flag

The flag of the Grand Spodist Church.

  • Name: Grand Spodist Church
  • State of relations: Stable alliance. Close cultural and economic ties, especially between the inhabitants of our respective Core Rim territories, precludes the possibility of a sudden, unforeseeable deterioration into war.
  • Known military forces: Iron Pazu'Mir Navy (naval/terrestrial), Heaven's Army (terrestrial)

The Church is a longtime friend and ally of ours, in fact the first major nation who we formed an official alliance with. As a result, we have grown close both socially and astrographically; we both have a good idea of each other's patterns of thought, and the Church is one of few major Bunsen nations who we share extensive direct borders with. Of course, this makes them a credible threat to us if we were to ever go to war.

The Church's military, perhaps more specifically their IRON PAZU'MIR NAVY, has a certain reputation among military science circles, and with good reason. They are known to be relatively slow to mobilize military forces in response to a threat, even if anticipated. In the event of war, that is a striking advantage to an attacking foe. However, the other part of their military reputation is that, once situated properly, their forces are difficult to dislodge from defensive positions. Thus, an extended conflict with the Church will become more grueling as time goes on as more and more of their defensive forces dig in against advancing foes.

From this it becomes obvious that the most effective strategy against the Church is a blitz. It is critical that the decisive blow is struck before they can muster their notorious defenses; in joint wargames, the IRON PAZU'MIR NAVY has proven to be a match for even the ASSAULT ARMADA when allowed to become fully fortified. The means by which such a decisive blow can be struck early on lies in the KEREO-ERION PORTAL. Gaining control of this wormhole passage allows us to immediately strike at the industrial and political heart of the Church, in KEREO SOVEREIGNTY and BREA SOVEREIGNTY.

In an invasion of the KEREO-BREA region, the Strategic Action Council would indicate the following as critical targets: PELLICIONE, the Church's gateway world for the KEREO-ERION PORTAL; QUILYUON, the capital of the Church; VOLARAED, the main shipbuilding world of central Church territory; LACASTE and BAHLANTA, which control transportation bottlenecks to the rest of Church territory south of KEREO-BREA; and RETTEGAR, which controls a bottleneck leading north to HELIOCO SOVEREIGNTY where Church forces can bypass the bottlenecks in BREA using the NORTHERN PASS between HELIOCO and ODWALLA SOVEREIGNTIES. If these worlds are controlled, it is unlikely that Church forces will be able to retake KEREO-BREA, thus removing one of their largest industrial zones from play and making invasions of other Church territories significantly easier.

However, that plan assumes that we will have the first move and that the Church will totally commit to retaking KEREO-BREA. Realistically, even if we successfully conduct an invasion of KEREO-BREA, the Church still has methods of striking back at us, via the CORE RIM. CORE RIM PROVINCE shares a direct border with the Church's YOSHRINI SOVEREIGNTY, with the ANTHALTI-CORE PORTAL sitting very near the border. If this secondary front is not accounted for, the Church could stage a counterattack on CORE RIM, and potentially ANTHALTI if the ANTHALTI-CORE PORTAL cannot be disabled before Church forces establish a foothold.

CORE RIM is especially at risk in the scenario of the Church invading us first. The Church could use the KEREO-ERION PORTAL against us, sending their forces through it to conduct a pincer maneuver on CORE RIM and leaving us unable to defend CORE RIM if forces are not already mobilized there. CORE RIM is a vital piece of our wartime economy, though we do not believe that losing CORE RIM would hurt us nearly as much as the Church losing KEREO-BREA in the "Federation Invades First" scenario. However, the CORE RIM would provide an excellent platform for the Church to extend their invasion into ERION, though any farther than that would likely begin to stretch the IRON PAZU'MIR NAVY's offensive capabilities, which are much weaker than their defensive ones.

In addition to CORE RIM being at risk, DELTA PROVINCE could also be in play as the DELTA SECTOR is adjacent to the Church-controlled ODWALLA SECTOR. However, we cannot see the Church being able to get an invasion fleet across either the MERNA-OMEGA GAP or through the NIVELIAN NEUTRAL ZONE before we are able to mobilize defenses in DELTA. Currently, the Church lacks intergalactic projection power and thus does not pose a threat to any of our extragalactic holdings, though their recent entente with THE DIVINARIUM may change that in the future.

Given their close proximity to key HEARTLANDS territories and their knowledge of our military methods, the Church poses a feasible threat to Federation power on the LARSON ARM, and could potentially cause trouble for our holdings on the OMEGA ARM. However, they lack intergalactic projection power, which reduces the overall threat they pose to us, but unlike before it is no longer certain if this will remain the case for the foreseeable future. Therefore, with the acknowledgement that the current state of relations precludes the realization of a threat, the Grand Spodist Church must be considered a CONSIDERABLE military threat.

Trivia[]

  • This page was created as a means to expand on the rather simplistic threat assessments given on the TIAF's Relations page, and as an outlet for CaptainTybusen to write up hypothetical war scenarios and explore military strategy.
  • As a result of encounters with undead entities in the Holy Shadow War and Essence-wielding forces in the First Bunsen War and the Xhodocto wars, the Strategic Action Council also drafts contingency plans for what would normally be considered purely fantastical scenarios, such as "Gigaquadrantic zombie apocalypse" or "evil mind-control wizard takes over the Federation using their army of super-stealthy ninja robots."
