Outfitters are a type of creator in Spore that allows to edit creatures with clothing. There are 3 outfitters available in the base game respectively; Tribal Outfitter, Civilization Outfitter, and Space Outfitter.
Outfitters in Spore[]
Generally, outfitters disable the ability to modify a creature's body and parts purposefully to clothe them. The creature's body color can be adjusted in Paint Mode. Additionally, each outfitter has their singular exclusive background for Test Drive Mode.
Tribal Outfitter[]
The Tribal Outfitter contains over 10 hats, 6 masks, 8 chest parts, 6 shoulder spaulders, 6 symbol parts, and 10 detail parts. In total, 46 accessories can be added. The outfitter has 200 budgets to add accessories for a creature in this outfitter. The player can add 150 more by using a "addDNA" cheat.
Within the Tribal Stage, the Tribal Outfitter can be accessed by going over Tribal Planner, clicking the icon of the helmet, and clicking the blue button on the left bottom corner. The player is given 100 budgets and any time they conquer the opposing tribes will be given 25 budgets. Tribal accessories have the purpose of augmenting the power of the ability to deal with circumstances more easily. However, as the player progresses by interacting with other tribes, the player will unlock new accessories; some are stronger successors of those accessories that grant higher-level stats, and others are purely used as cosmetics.
Civilization Outfitter[]
Unlike the Tribal Outfitter, accessories in this outfitter do not provide anything beneficial for the species besides cosmetic purposes. The creator default budget is 1,000, higher than the average 200 in the Tribal Outfitter. The outfitter adds new 5 hats, 3 masks, 4 chest parts, 3 shoulder spaulders, 3 symbol parts, and 5 accessories, in total over 23 accessories were added.
Space Outfitter[]
Similarly to Civilization Stage, accessories are used for nothing but as cosmetics and give 1,000 budgets in this outfitter. The outfitter adds new 5 hats, 3 masks, 4 chest parts, 3 shoulder spaulders, 3 symbol parts, and 5 accessories, in total over 23 accessories added exclusively to this outfitter.
Captain Outfitter[]
This outfitter is included in the Spore Galactic Adventures expansion pack. It adds 32 new accessories that grant special abilities for the creature, available in the new "Captain" button tab.
Development[]
An editor for outfitting creatures with clothing and apparel was shown in the design document spread in Wired 14.04 (April 2006). Clothes were still being discussed when Gaming Steve interviewed Will Wright at E3 2005, where the latter noted that clothes would be included on the condition "if we can do it [...] in the same creature editor, with parts [instead of] the creature parts". GC 07: In a Gamespot interview, it is said that you can assign different outfits to members of your tribe depending on what they are doing. So you can distinguish who is doing what based on their outfit.
