During the Tribal stage, one can fish from the local water sources for a food source that is rich in protein, as long as your species is either a carnivore or an omnivore. However, herbivores can use this resource to collect nutritious seaweed, instead. Unfortunately, fishing spots can be exhausted, in which case fish stop jumping. When a tribe member attempts to fish at an empty spot, they will grab at the water,( or stab at it with their fishing spear, if they have one) and bring it back up with nothing in it. They will shake their heads, and come back to the village. Many players think that this is a bug if they aren't paying attention. It is unknown if fishing spots can run out if you are an herbivore. If you were an Omnivore, you were granted the Flying Fish ability, which can scare new fish to the shore if your fishing supply runs out. The fish have three eyes that bear a resemblance to Ocubulge, a carnivore mouth, and one pair of cilia. When one acquires fishing spears, fishing becomes both faster and easier to perform. If your tribe is close to a fishing spot it is the fastest and easiest way to get food. Your tribe can eat the fish while fishing and restores hunger.
To fish, select a tribe member, then right-click the part of the water where you can see fishes jumping out. These areas are marked with a small fish symbol on your minimap. Keep in mind that, if a fishing spot is too far away, it may not be worth it. An effective method of fishing is to leave two tribe members at the village at all times, sending one out to fish constantly. This way, you have a constant supply of food.
- Hungry Tribe members will sometimes eat while fishing, making it possible for a tribe member to fish and eat at the same time.
- Fishing is the only way to get two different types of food from identical sources. This was likely because of the lack of Herbivore food sources compared to Carnivore/Omnivore food.
