The icon of Mouth
Mouths are an essential part to any creature created in the base Spore game. Mouths are the only way that one is capable of consuming any type of food, necessary for survival. Thus, this is the only part that must be placed on a creature (you cannot leave the editor unless your creature has a mouth in some way, shape, or form).
Overview
Edit
There are 40 mouths to choose from, including mouths with pincers, suckers, sharp teeth, and plain old human-like lips. Each mouth has a different attribute that will affect the stats of your creature. A large mouth full of teeth, for example, may give your creature 5 points to its biting ability. The type of mouth also affects whether your creature will be a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore. You can place as many mouths as you see fit on your creature, and you can place them wherever you want, but every creature must have at least 1 mouth to be saved. [1] There are sixteen omnivorous mouths, twelve carnivorous mouths, and twelve herbivorous mouths. Carnivorous mouths are more often used for attacking than socializing, due to their low-level sing, Omnivorous mouths have balanced bite and sing abilities, herbivorous mouths are generally used for socializing due to their high sing abilities.
Note: All abilities are limited to 5 points.
Mouth part data
Edit
The names were taken from the most up-to-date patched and released version of Spore.
All mouths provide a mating call and at least Bite 1 and Sing 1, with the exception of the bot mouths, which have no sing level.
Four mouths on the same row will give creatures voices that are similar, if not the same.
The free demo contains the Reptilian and Insect mouth parts.

Modifying the mouth's size, but not shape, will affect the creature's voice.
Voices
Edit
All mouths sound unique and determine the way your creature sounds for the rest of the game.
- Reptilian mouths will make deep, growling noises, like that of an alligator or large dog. For some reason, when singing, they almost sound like a young child. Their mating calls differ between the Spore Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of four barks, but in the actual Spore game, it makes more growls than the creature creator.
- Insectoid mouths will make chirps and clicks, like that of a cricket. This is also the sound that cell mouths make. The mating call is also different from the Creature Creator than in the full Spore Game. In the Creature Creator, the mouth made high pitched cricket chirps. Their mating call is actually a sped up version of the Willosaur mating call from GDC 2005.
- Fish mouths will make clicks and squeaks, like that of a dolphin. Their mating call also consists of various dolphin squeaks, despite the fact that the Fish mouths resembles a barracuda's mouth or a shark's mouth.
- Birds of prey mouths will make squawks and honks, like that of a parrot. Their mating calls are that of a peacock. Probably as a reference to talking parrots, in the creature editor and creator (mainly in the test drive mode when babies are added and interaction is happening) as well as during creature and tribe stage you can hear creatures with any bird of prey beak say words such as "hello" and even "beunos dias" (Spanish for good morning) in a stereotypical squeaky parrot's voice.
- Primate mouths will make ooks and squeals, like that of a chimpanzee. Like the Reptilian and Radial mouths, their mating calls differ from the Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of growling, whereas in the full Spore game it resembles that of a gibbon.
- Larval mouths make deep croaks and roars, somewhat like seals or sea lions. If this type of mouth is at sing level 2, 3, 4, or 5 (only in Creature Creator by combining this type of mouth with mouths that have high-level sing.), they will make bellowing cries, like that of an elephant. Their mating calls differ from the Creature Creator and the full Spore game. In the Creature Creator, their mating call consists of various gurgling sounds, but in the full game, it is a high-pitched screaming sound, like a bugling elk.
- Amphibian mouths will make high pitched croaks and clicks, like that of a treefrog, or for some, a bullfrog. Their mating call consists of various squeaks. On several occasion, Amphibian mouths will make dolphin-like sounds.
- Mammalian mouths will make bays and honks, like that of a donkey. Their mating calls are a long, howling sound somewhat like a cow.
- Swine mouths will make oinks and squeals, like that of a boar. Their mating calls consist of snorting or strangely, howling, kind of like wolves.
- Songbird mouths will make chirps and birdsong, like that of any songbird. Their mating calls consist of soft singing, closely resembling a Common Loon.
In Galactic Adventures, the mouth a creature has will affect its language if it is intelligent. If a creature has a mouth with lips, it will speak in a gruff male voice, however, if it has insectoid or radial mouthparts, the creature speaks in a rasping language consisting of clicks. The beaked mouths also sound different, even from each other. Creatures with prey bird mouths speak with a high-pitched language consisting of squawks, while songbird mouths speak in a language consisting more of soft cooing. The captain the player is using always has the gruff male voice though.
Cell Mouthparts
Edit
These mouths are only available in the Cell Editor. They can be kept when your cell evolves into a creature, but if they are taken off, they cannot be put back. All of them have the same "voice" as the "Insect" row of mouths, but with a certain patch, the Filter Mouth sounds like a herbivore beak, and a proboscis sounding like a larval mouth. When a Herbivore mouth and a Carnivore Mouth, you become an Omnivore and can eat both meat chunks and green plants. Another mouth, Proboscis, is an omnivore part but you cannot eat meat chunks with it. Instead, you must eat plant buds or suck the meat directly from other creatures. It can be harvested by killing the cells Nosey or Bloato or from a meteor.

The basic Cell mouths. Columns 2, 3 and 4 possess the Hidden Cell parts that can't be used without a mod.
The "proboscis" is a mouth that is earned in the Cell Stage by killing a Nosey or Bloato. This mouth costs 25 DNA and makes your cell an omnivore. The proboscis is a mouth that lets you suck the juice out of plants and the blood out of other cells. Although this mouth makes you an omnivore, you can't eat meat chunks. Although it is an omnivore mouth, it does not make you an omnivore for later levels if you only eat other cells or plants (in the first case you will become a carnivore, in the later you will become an herbivore).

Trivia
Edit
- The icon for the mouth part resembles the terrorpin.
- The skexybeast mouth is most likely a reference to the Skeksis' mouths from The Dark Crystal.
- If the game is hacked to force the game to save and play creatures with no mouths, the player will be incapable of more then just eating, they also won't be able to collect bone piles, limiting the selection of parts one can get.
- The game actually has data files specifically labeled for "Starvivores", to prevent the game from crashing when no mouth creatures are loaded.
- Dee Bradley Baker provides the vocal effects for most if not all mouths [2]
