It is currently unknown to what extent the player can affect religion. However, certain elements such as adding music or weapons can affect the creatures' religion. This will be most common during the tribal phase.
In a 1Up.com interview, Will said players might be able to get Tribal Phase creatures to worship them by doing spectacular things using the UFO.
As well, religion toolbars can be seen in more recent screenshots.
