At one point during Spore's creation, according to a video from E3, when your creature emerged from the primordial ooze, the creature emerged as a "slug", or a blank slate prompting the player to be creative in the creation of a unique creature entirely from the player's imagination.
It is unclear how the slugs survived once they emerged. It may have been that all other creatures of the time were also slugs or at least didn't pose much of a threat. When your creature emerged from the sea you could see many of the same creatures. The creatures looked like a brown sluggish type organism.
This process however has been proven to no longer be the case upon the release of Spore itself. Instead, you now enter a "water creature" editor, where you can remove or edit any cellular trait you had obtained through the Cell stage, and also add one of three types of legs. However, you can still create a slug by simply not adding legs at all.
