Willwright

William R. Wright (born January 20, 1960) is a computer game designer from the US, and is co-founder of the game development company Maxis. He was the original designer of the two groundbreaking computer games SimCity and The Sims. His most recent project is Spore, a simulation that allows the player to influence the development of a life form from a single-cellular stage, through multi-cellular life in the oceans and on land, to the development of sapience and tool-use, and eventually interplanetary and interstellar flight.

Wright was given a "Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2001. In 2002, he became the fifth person to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame. He has been called one of the most important people in gaming, technology, and entertainment by publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Time, PC Gamer, and GameSpy. For bringing simulations to the mass market, Wright was awarded the PC Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2005.

  • There has been a substantial amount of outcry from the scientific community over claims that Spore is a game about science and evolution - Science Magazine even published a piece called "Flunking Spore", where a panel of scientists played and reviewed it. Obviously, some choices were due to hardware constraints, but would you consider changing the ones that clearly weren't (using Panspermia origin theory; vanishing the last generation of player's creature when they "evolve" it; allowing a creature to change almost completely within a single generation; no effect on speed from changing body mass, limb length, etc.) in a future patch, or, barring that, retracting the claim about Spore being a game about science? • Spore has been made in such a way that basically, the player models the appearance of many different things for one game consisting out of 5 minigames. The actual videogame experience does not change with the made objects, so there is no individuality (nor value of replayability) during the game. Although the same tactic has worked wonders for the Sims games, Spore is not the best kind of videogame to easily adopt the whole expansion pack thing. Why are new pieces of building content not freely shared by the creators, instead of sold for ridiculous prices, taking the very low value of actual in-game usability into consideration? --Jaedumuth 17:12, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I think your games are very special, although your games don't compete with games like Crysis, Your games are better since they are wanted by a wider audience, and your games make tons and hours of fun. • First of all, let me say Spore is an amazing game. I'd like to ask you about the game balance - while in the earlier stages the balance is pretty consistent, in the Space Stage you can reach a point of effectively unlimited resources by building and terraforming sufficient colonies (just trading Spice in your own Empire). Did you ever consider putting in a counter or inhibiting factor to this geometric progression, in order to keep things fresh? If so, what? Do you consider Spore to be 'finished' or can we expect the game mechanics to be updated, or superseded by a 'Spore 2'? Thanks for your time. Targ Collective 22:38, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

  • In an interview[1] with Jill Tarter of SETI, regarding whether or not Spore was a valid model of evolution, you state that people who play your games start to argue with the assumptions of the model presented to them and eventually begin to transcend it.
