William R. Wright (born January 20, 1960) is a computer game designer from the US, and is co-founder of the game development company Maxis. He was the original designer of the two groundbreaking computer games SimCity and The Sims. His most recent project is Spore, a simulation that allows the player to influence the development of a life form from a single-cellular stage, through multi-cellular life in the oceans and on land, to the development of sapience and tool-use, and eventually interplanetary and interstellar flight.

Wright was given a "Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2001. In 2002, he became the fifth person to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame. He has been called one of the most important people in gaming, technology, and entertainment by publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Time, PC Gamer, and GameSpy. For bringing simulations to the mass market, Wright was awarded the PC Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2005.

Hey all, Just wanted to give you an update on the interview - the transcription took a while as the audio quality of the interview wasn't as good as it could have been.   • Mr. Wright, I am an avid player of many of your games (My sister is a major Sims 2-addict) and I want to be a game designer when I grow up. I love the concept of creating expansive worlds for people to explore and enjoy, basically, I love to create. The decision, of course, was inspired by you and your line of great games.   • Spore has been made in such a way that basically, the player models the appearance of many different things for one game consisting out of 5 minigames. The actual videogame experience does not change with the made objects, so there is no individuality (nor value of replayability) during the game. Although the same tactic has worked wonders for the Sims games, Spore is not the best kind of videogame to easily adopt the whole expansion pack thing.   • First of all, let me say Spore is an amazing game. I'd like to ask you about the game balance - while in the earlier stages the balance is pretty consistent, in the Space Stage you can reach a point of effectively unlimited resources by building and terraforming sufficient colonies (just trading Spice in your own Empire). Did you ever consider putting in a counter or inhibiting factor to this geometric progression, in order to keep things fresh? If so, what?
