SporeWiki:Image Guidelines

From SporeWiki, the knowledge base dedicated to Spore

Important: content uploaded or otherwise contributed to the Spore Wikia is made available under the GNU Free Documentation License.

  • When uploading images not created by yourself, make sure the author made the image available under the GFDL, providing a link back to the original source.
  • When uploading images created by yourself, you should be aware that anyone else is then free to re-use your image under the GFDL license.

[edit] Duplicates

MediaWiki provides features to automatically resize images, so it is not necessary to upload multiple copies of an image in order to use it at different resolutions.

[edit] Resizing errors

MediaWiki occasionally makes an error when converting an image (typically high resolution images or complex SVG images). If this occurs, either notify a Spore Wikia admin via their talk page or via the Spore Wikia IRC channel.

[edit] Updating images

MediaWiki has the ability to keep a history of an image- on the image page, there will be an option to upload a new version of an image. This is preferable to uploading the image to a new filename with an alphanumeric or dated suffix, as any article that uses the old image does not need to be updated.

[edit] Sporepedia Images

Images from the Sporepedia (or PNG images otherwise created with Spore creation tools/editors) should only be uploaded by their original creators.

A method to automatically associate Spore Wikia users with their Spore screen name is being planned.

[edit] Choice of format

[edit] Screen shots

Unless you have found that a particular screenshot compresses better using PNG when compared to a full quality JPEG (it has been known to happen), screenshots should be made available using the JPEG format.

[edit] Icons/Badges/Achievements

Unless available as SVG, images for icons, badges & achievements should be made available as a PNG- since the native size of such icons is relatively small on-screen, it may be necessary to increase the size of the image in an article. If the image were to be uploaded as a JPEG, the increased size would make any compression artifacts more visible.

[edit] Diagrams

Simple diagrams should be uploaded as either PNG or SVG. Complex high-resolution diagrams may compress better using full quality JPEG.

[edit] Animated Avatars

The GIF is the most reliable for animated photos such as spinning planet animations.

[edit] Sporepedia Images

Always use the PNG format, which is default for the photos even without a change.
