[edit] New Layout

Gonna have to say well done to Zorlac for the impressive new layout for the main page. The fact that the center and right panels have a blue background is a little off, but I like how that works well with the user created content template, whether you meant to do it or not. I also archived old discussion to give the talk page a fresh look too. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 15:26, 3 April 2006 (PDT)

My monitor doesn't display the background colors very well, or at all. I had to have someone point it out. I fixed the middle background, if you see anything else go ahead and change it or tell me. Zorlac 16:42, 3 April 2006 (PDT)
It's cool with the first row of cells to not reach as wide as the contributions/what is a wiki row, right? -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 16:44, 3 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Welcome message

Welcome to SporeWiki, the knowledge base dedicated to Spore the computer simulation video game devloped by Will Wright.

Should be:

Welcome to SporeWiki, the knowledge base dedicated to Spore - the computer simulation video game developed by Will Wright.

Game Stage would also read better as Game Stages.

Spelling and punctuation errors on the front page make my eyes bleed. --Daxx (T C) 08:15, 4 April 2006 (PDT)

Just the "-" is different there right? I changed that, thanks :) -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:49, 4 April 2006 (PDT)
There's an e in developed too. --Daxx (T C) 10:00, 4 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Voting

Well, it would be nice to have the voting enabled for topsites again. Also, you can probably get rid of the simlinks image since you have the link there anyway. --Daxx (T C) 08:24, 4 April 2006 (PDT)

The person who was in charge of spore-net sent an email to Zorlac telling him we'd need to leave the button or we'd be removed from the list (if he could post the full transcript of the email, that'd be good). I sent him an email in response that said this:
Hello,

I'm responding for zorlac from zorlac@sporewiki.com.

We removed the topsites link from our site because of your unprofessional actions in adding an exceptionally obstusive pop-up ad and other ads to that site.

Sporewiki gave Spore-Net a fair percentage of the votes on the topsites, I'd estimate we delivered 40% or more of the votes that you received. For our participation in this list we recieved little or no referalls from Spore-Net. Before the banner and ads went up, this wasn't really an issue, it was more of an amusing clicking competition between Sporewiki and some other sites. I believe you realized how many hits YOUR topsites list was getting from our well advertised site (shouldn't it be vice-versa?) and decided to cash in on this. I find this extremly dishonorable since absolutely no notice was given to the sites that headed up your list. To put it bluntly, you waited until you received plenty of hits, then milked off of sporewiki and other sites popularity and desire to get advertised. The implementation of the banner and ads was just enough for us to realize how bad of an idea it was to support a site that was giving little or nothing back to sporewiki. We will not be placing the spore-net link back on our site due to these actions, and due to the pointlessness of it. Thanks for originally hosting a topsites that encouraged us to advertise in more fruitful locations, hope things like the banner and ads don't happen again and good luck with your site.

~Sporewiki.com Administration
That should explain things enough. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:51, 4 April 2006 (PDT)
Okay, that makes sense I guess. --Daxx (T C) 10:00, 4 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] MediaWiki 1.6 is out

link

As soon as Zorlac gets a chance to update SporeWiki to the new version I'll be able to add a bunch of stuff. :) Hope it's soon because I've been wanting to play with optional parameters for in templates for a while, and it'll help improve the creature database infobox template A LOT by allowing more options to those who want them. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:06, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Upgraded

Version upgraded to 1.6.3, check out this page for more info on the new stuff. Zorlac 18:51, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

Nice :-D. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions)
LOL, no more sig for you? Zorlac

[edit] Slight error

Now I know this probably comes from wikipedia, but strictly speaking [ˈwɪ.kiː] is <wih-key>, not <wick-ey>, which would be rendered by [ˈwɪk.iː]. </pedantry> --Daxx (T C) 06:11, 28 April 2006 (PDT)

Having thought about it you don't need to change them, you can actually just remove the hyphens from wee-kee and wick-ey, and the thing will then read correctly. --Daxx (T C) 06:13, 28 April 2006 (PDT) AKA grammar nazi
Done, thanks. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 06:53, 28 April 2006 (PDT)
Well I may be a grammar nazi, but... well... I can't really think of anything to say to that. I can't help it, it's like a compulsion. --Daxx (T C) 09:04, 28 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] New additions

I have been thinking about this for the last two days actually. and I think that it is worth addressing. Fanfiction will probably become a dominant part of the site pending we have cut-off dates for old articles, so I feel that adding a link ot the Story Database Section, under the Category User Created content would be to the benefit of the section and everyone on the site, by making it far easier to get there. Another thing that we need to consider bringing up here is the SporeWiki:Mission Statement. St. Fenix 15:09, 1 May 2006 (PDT)

I think a link to the fanfic section is worth adding, it will play a part in the creature database as it expands and changes when the game comes out. As said in the SporeWiki:Mission Statement, I think that it needs to just be edited for awhile by everyone who is a big part of this site before it gets more public attention. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 15:34, 1 May 2006 (PDT)
I never demanded that we have it now, especially since its in its infant stages, I was merely keeping it fresh in your memory. But I am glad that you put the Fanfiction section up, It is very important especially at this time where so many people are waiting for spore and are instead writing Fanfiction to stave off the boredom of waiting. St. Fenix 15:47, 1 May 2006 (PDT)
O I know, just commenting on it here as well as there :). -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 15:57, 1 May 2006 (PDT)
works for me then :D St. Fenix 16:09, 1 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] NEW SPORE GAMEPLAY VIDEOS

a true treasure trove of tremendously amazing knowledge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHaulHxmO4A --SCHAFER

Already mentioned in the Information Repository. - Yossitaru 21:00, 10 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Linking Error

The Building and Vehicle "(C|G)" links are switched. (i.e. I click on Vehicle C, and I am taken to Building C.) --SimRPGman 21:17, 14 May 2006 (PDT)

Good catch, it's all fixed now. - Yossitaru 22:20, 14 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Logo

I'm liking the new logo. Very flash. When did you put that up? --Daxx (T C) 07:24, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

Inspiration hit me at like 5am last night. I think it is pretty wiki. Zorlac 15:27, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Countdown

Just some nitpicking, but it's "until Spore's", not "untill Spores" (which would mean something weird like "uncultivate a bunch of spores").—This comment was added by AndreasBlixt (TalkContributionsE-mail).

Also, why have we picked a specific date? (Unless of course I've missed something important)? --Daxx (T C) 05:15, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

Oh, It's just a random stab in April that the other guy used. If you guys don't like it I will remove it from the front page. Or just use months. Sorry, thought it was nifty ^^; Zorlac 05:27, 19 May 2006 (PDT)
It is pretty cool, but I think months is a better indicator (otherwise it looks like it's an official date). Thumbs up for the idea, though. --Daxx (T C) 05:34, 19 May 2006 (PDT)
I was gonna do it now, but then I realized that doing it by month is a bit more tricky since the days in a month change... I'm gonna do it when it isn't 6 in the morning. Guess i'll have to define how many days are in each month and go from there. Blah, making things complex. Zorlac
Psh, just throw the word "estimated" in there and it's all cleared up. I like seeing a days countdown, since we have basically a 30 day range that will said. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 08:19, 19 May 2006 (PDT)
Honestly, I don't have the time to figure out how to calculate months left, nor the will, when I can just say 'estimated' Zorlac

[edit] Creature Creation of the day

Idea time! I think it would be an awesome idea to have a "Creature Creation Concept of the day" on the main page (or perhaps just the creature database). It would be automatically updated with only a resorting after it goes through the whole list. To test it out, I'm going to use this code:

{{User:Mason11987/Creature of the day/{{CURRENTYEAR}}-{{CURRENTMONTH}}-{{CURRENTDAY}}}}

For today, the code inside the brackets reads:

User:Mason11987/Creature of the day/2009-11-{{CURRENTDAY})

and so would load the text stored on that page. The section would load code similar to this:

User:Mason11987/Creature of the day/2009-11-12

Each day, that will be different, and we'd only have to set it up beforehand. What do you think? If it works we could move it to the SporeWiki namespace of course. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 08:36, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

I'm setting this up currently to display here. Check it out. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:15, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Spam blocking attempts

this is a link I got from a stategywiki.net page to a thing on meta, you should check it out zorlac [1]. They (strategywiki) set up a page, and if you could do whatever would be needed to get a page like that working then it'd be helpful I think. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 08:52, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

The SpamBlacklist extension on sourceforge is like... gone. Unless I can find an alternate download, no go. Zorlac

[edit] Main Page Is Broken!

I'm using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050919 Firefox/1.0.7, and the main page is totally broken for me. --Daxx (T C) 16:22, 20 May 2006 (PDT)

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060426 Firefox/1.5.0.3 here, working perfectly fine... You could try updating your Firefox. Also working pretty well in Internet Explorer 6 which is older than your Firefox version.
-- Andreas Blixt 16:29, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
If you could go through the history and fine me a version which isn't broken, we could figure this out. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060426 Firefox/1.5.0.3 -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 17:49, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
The last version that wasn't broken was the version that was before you added the "creature of the day". I can't change Firefox because these are University computers. I think you should make it more compatible regardless. --Daxx (T C) 04:16, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
Completly understand. Check out if the example on Template:Layer works. If it does, just hold on and we'll get the main page updated with better code, if it does not, I'll figure out what's wrong. If you could give a screenshot of what you see, that would be useful too. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 10:25, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
Template:Layer works perfectly. Thanks. --Daxx (T C) 14:48, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
We should be redoing the main page soon to use that layer template (it should happen in the next couple days I'd imagine), then it'll be fine. I'm sure you aren't the only person and if I was at college, the comp. labs have the FF you are using, so I'll make sure it's fixed ASAP. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 15:53, 21 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Copyrights

Please include something about the copyright status of SporeWiki and the contributions to it. It would be nice if you put it under the GFDL like the Wikipedia and such. 24.76.102.140 20:45, 20 May 2006 (PDT)

GNU for you. Zorlac

[edit] Recent Modifications

And I will look into more complete spam-blocking. —This comment was added by Zorlac (TalkContributionsE-mail).

Awesome mods. I love the proxy blocking, awesome, and the event countdown and other two extensinos are awesome, I have to find a use for the 5th one. Thanks.—This comment was added by Mason11987 (TalkContributionsE-mail).

[edit] Logos?

Is there a logo for the spore gameplay yet? for example, there is a logo for users who play resident evil, or SMB's, or people who think that the GameCube is better than the PS2 or X-Box etc...so is there a logo for the spore game or a logo saying that this user has created a creature for spore? if there's not, i'll make an attempt to create one

Garfunkle20 14:50, 21 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

EDIT - I ment to say is there a logo for the original wiki, like the examples I gave, not the ones saying "This user has created such and such creature"

Garfunkle20 14:53, 21 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

Are you referring to userboxes like I have on my wikipedia userpage? If you are, what exactly do you mean for a spore gameplay userbox? Like "I love spore?" or something like that? If you are talking about something like that, are you asking if there is one here at sporewiki or if there is one at wikipedia? Let me know :). -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 15:53, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
Yea, like the "I Love Spore" or something like that, to put on page page for SporeWiki and the original Wiki, just so people who view my profile can link to this wiki and explore...Garfunkle20 04:13, 22 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle

[edit] Contributors

I'm going to be a nit-picking arse again, but the bottom boxes on the main page no longer line up, the bottom of the Contributors box is slightly higher than the What Is A Wiki box. --Daxx (T C) 19:10, 21 May 2006 (PDT)

Whilst we're at it, we may as well even up the other boxes too. --Daxx (T C) 04:55, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Wikiboard link on main page?

Why is there no link to the Wikiboard on the Main Page? It seems like a good place to put it.-Sgore 12:39, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

The Wikiboard was retired a bit ago, for it's lack of use. Unless it was unretired no need to link. Zorlac
Ah. Okay then.-Sgore

[edit] Release Date

Why is the release date being listed as June? A gaming website is hardly a reliable answer. Will Wright himself said May/April and "Not another E3." I would not trust that source. Most agree on gamingsteve that it is probably not true. Stuckin2004

I thought it was aprile/early may. I hadn't bothered to count the days. I'll change it to end of april. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 18:50, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
It was based off of a retail site, those have said things wildly different then the official. I think we should stick with the official. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 19:12, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

Anyone else saddened to notice the release date over a year away..? I need to find some good games to fill up the time till then.--Tehwalrus 21:31, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Humans

Is it ok if I put in the Human creature for this SporeWiki? I was considering to create them for Spore but I dont really know if its possible to, I've not heard anything about being able to put hair or cloths on your creatures. Anyone know? If its ok then I'll put up the "Human" creature for the database....Garfunkle20 11:35, 24 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

Yeah, no problem. I figure we'll get a lot of variations, and I'll have to deal with that when the game comes out, but go for it for now. At worst it'll be moved to a different name if a problem arises. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions - E-mail) 12:13, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
cool, ill make a start 62.252.128.17 12:32, 24 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

OK, I've done mostly it, I doubt I will be able to edit it further, heres the link Garfunkle20 03:36, 25 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

So you know, you can (and probably should) write intra-wiki links as link. I think it's very cool though. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions - E-mail) 07:24, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

meh, they both do the same job... Garfunkle20 09:50, 25 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

[edit] Creature of the Day

I vote to have one of my creatures as Creature of the Day :D. Well you do have the same creatures over and over, so why not new ones? If not mine, then at least pick diffrent ones please? Like Ghengiskonch by Hydromancerx or Equitaurian by Wes13... Garfunkle20 05:03, 30 May 2006 (PDT)Garfunkle20

I'll throw a recommend a creature of the day link up there, but for now just go to SporeWiki:Creature of the day/Recommendations. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions - E-mail) 09:24, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
