Planet

From SporeWiki, the knowledge base dedicated to Spore

(Redirected from Terrain)
Jump to: navigation, search

Planets or terrain in Spore play a crucial part in the game, as they are where all major activity happens, outside of space phase interstellar exploration. Initially, they will be made up of any combination of terrain features, such as mountains, oceans, lakes, plains, flora, etc, as well as other creatures. The player has no jurisdiction over which planet he or she will begin on. Once the tribal phase has been reached, buildings will become a common sight on planets. As the player continues, cities and other creature-made features will become more and more common on planets with sapient life.

[edit] Types of planets

From what has been showcased so far, there is a wide variety of planets. Gas giants are possible, and even habitable moons orbiting gas giants have been displayed. Rings around gas giants are possible, as are rings around rocky planets. The size of rocky planets, however, has remained small in comparison to gas giants, but that is natural.

[edit] Computer-generated planets

Some planets in Spore are computer-generated. That is to say, they are created by algorithms. The developement team is including a wide variety of algorithms, making anything from hyper-realistic worlds to whimsical planets. Oceans seen from E3 2006 have ranged in color from a pearlescent green to a ferric red, hinting at the variety.

[edit] Player-made planets

There are two types of player-made planets:

  • Planets found by different players and then terraformed. These types of planets will probably not be shared through the pollination system, because they are not created with an editor. If, every time you created a new volcano or ocean, a different "copy" of the planet were uploaded to the server, there would be a vast number of nearly identical worlds stored in memory.
  • Planets created from scratch using the planet editor. At E3 2006, Will Wright announced that players would eventually be able to customize planets, making modifications to the terrain, the colors of the land and water, the climate, and so on. Presumably these types of planets will then be uploaded to the server and spread through the content pollination system similar to the method by which creatures, buildings and flora are distributed.

.

[edit] Number Of Planets

The estimate for the number of planets has been as random as 500,000 to 7,000,000,000. Of course until the game releases we will not know but in the TED 2007 conference Wright menitoned several million planets. As to whether new players will add planets to the universe has yet to be seen.

[edit] Other

The Sporepedia can keep track of planets visited by the player by providing a card which contains the planet's stats, again similar to the method used to keep track of known creatures.
