An uprising can happen when the player's colony or city in Civilization Stage or Space Stage has minimal happiness. It can take a long time, but at first spice production will lower and inside cities the citizens will protest in the city plaza. When an uprising begins in earnest, the citizens will stop working altogether, and the player will receive a message from the city or colony to increase happiness and reduce the amount of factories. The problem can only be solved by rearranging the city layout in the city editor. Placing a Loyalty Booster and/or Happiness Booster or having the Pleasing Performance consequence ability reduces the likelihood of revolts.
- It is possible for a space colony to revolt if only one city is unhappy, and even if the sum of all cities' happiness is neutral or positive.
- Although the Mission Log mentions that revolting colonies may split from your empire, this has never been observed in-game.
